It is a cold, gloomy night and the wind is howling and it’s 2030 now. I’m sitting in front of the fire with my sweetheart, Bella. We like to spend our time together in the gloomy night. Hugging her and keeping her warm is my duty. We are a very loving couple. This is an observation commented by everyone who knows us. We have been married six years ago. I’m an engineer and Bella is a housewife. We have been living together in a very small village.
Things in my household have been running very smoothly until recently Bella started complaining about not feeling well. It so happened when there are no hospitals nor clinics nearby. There is only a small medicine shop to attend to the ill. The nearest hospital is about fifty miles away. Bella had refused to go for a medical check-up even with the persistent persuasion from me. Knowing the stubborn streak in my wife’s nature. I have to give up my futile attempts.
One evening, I have returned home later than usual. I can’t believe my eyes, for the first time of our six years of marriage, no one received me at the door and no one brought me my slippers. There is no warm smile and finally no dinner awaited me. I can’t find my wife in the house. I’m dumbfounded and my heart missed a beat when I found a slip of paper on the dressing table. There is a message which read DARLING, LEFT FOR THE HOSPITAL. EMERGENCY. NO TIME TO INFORM YOU, LOVE BELLA. I stared at the message in disbelief. I kept on reading the message over and over again. I hoped that I had read wrongly.

The first thought that came to my mind was that Bella must have been taken seriously ill. I blamed myself for not making my wife go for a medical check-up earlier on. I kept on telling myself that I won’t forgive myself if anything happened to her. I didn’t know the real meaning of the word ‘agony’ until that moment.
To make things worse, I can’t find any taxi around the village. The only thing I can do was to wait for the next morning. Early the next morning, after gulping down a cup of coffee, I began my journey to the hospital. To me, the minutes seemed like hours but at last I arrived at my destination.
You can well imagine the relief of my face when I saw Bella sitting in the waiting room, looking healthy and fine. I shed tears of joy and hugged my surprised wife and demanded for an explanation for the message that she had left me. Then, Bella told me that she had just accompanied our best friend, Ah Beng to the hospital as her baby’s arrival was due and her husband was away. Bella laughed at me for jumping to a wrong conclusion. Both of us walk in happily to see our best friend and her newborn baby.
Yes, It’s like that! I wish my life could be so funny and surprising just with my family, not others.
