The future is always changing and engineers are leading that change. I want to be part of that change while doing something I love. This is when I realized that the field of engineering is what I was interested in studying. Always since I was young I’ve always wonder how most things worked in life, When I first heard that we were going to have a chance to interview someone in our fields of study I was excited. I actually knew as soon as it was announce who I was going to interview. I choose to interview my father not only because he has had a great impact in my life of course, but because he is one of the most successful engineers I know. One afternoon when my father had arrived from worked I asked him if I could interview him about his career. He gave me a smiled and he quickly replied “Of course” We conducted the interview at the dining room table before having dinner. The room was quiet as my father was patiently waiting to hear what kind of questions I was going to ask him. I went ahead and began; the interview was completely conducted in Spanish as the interviewee only understood English well, but couldn’t speak it well. I translated the interview later. I began the interview asking him “Why did you decide to pick this career field.” He followed by quickly replying “It was all from small curiosity on how things worked.” I asked if he could elaborate a bit more, he did “I would disassemble the item he was curious about and he would try to study how it worked and later assemble it back together.” At this time I followed by asking what was his current degree title and how long it took him to achieve it. “He responded my current degree title is Electrical Engineer and it took me six years. The career takes five years to achieve in Cuba, but because of personal problems I had to stop for a year.” I glance at the kitchen and see my mother which was preparing the dinner, now listening to the interview. It looks like someone else is interested in the interview. One important question I asked him was if the career requires communication skills. He answers “of course you do, every job you do is with a partner and if you want the job to be well done you must communicate with each other. After that when you are done with the job you must explain how it works to the owner so they can know how to use it. Communication is a big one in this field even with my language barrier I have to communicate and I haven’t had any problems yet so far.

“At this time the interviewee was apologizing for not being as detailed as he wish he could. The interview business is all new to him. I followed with asking him if he travel a lot even though I live with him and I knew the response to this question I just want to know if the career requires lots of traveling. I looked at him when I asked the question and he laughed. He replied “Well you know the answer to this question I do travel very often. I’ve almost been everywhere. I’ve been to Venice, Singapore, Spain, Alaska, and Canada just to name a few. To answer your question more accurately yes this career requires you to travel often which is not bad because you get to see different places. Only thing that I don’t enjoy is being away from the family.” I have seen the pictures he has taken in all his trips and they are amazingly beautiful. Hopefully that will be me in the near future traveling everywhere. The topic everyone loves to talk about was next. What’s the salary range for this field He smiled “everyone’s favorite topic! Well anywhere from $60.000 is a good start. Ones you have enough knowledge and understanding of your job and your skillful enough you should be in the $80,000 range.
My next question is my personal favorite from the whole interview. What does it take to be an engineer? I felt that this was a great way to know if I was preparing for this field. My father replied “lots and lots of love for all technology and love for how it works. It’s a bit of everything you have to be knowledgeable all around with computer, technical parts and mechanics. You must keep up with technology because it changes daily you must keep updated with it so you don’t fall behind.” Looks like I’m in the right track as I do that often right now. My father was getting really comfortable now he was really enjoying the interview. I followed the interview asking him if he was happy doing what he was doing what he does. He said “Yes, because my job is something I love doing and always will.” At this time we were getting to the end of the interview and my mother was still hearing the interview. I asked. Are there any downsides to your career? He easily replied “for me there’s no downside to my career. “ We had arrived at the end of the interview and I had my final question. Do you think this is a future proof career? He ended his interview saying “Yes this career will be always needed as engineers are what build or future for us.

As I was evaluating the responses I noticed I didn’t receive the detail I wanted to get from the interviewee. It was understandable as it was his first interview ever and he could have been nervous. I wasn’t nervous at all while doing the interview because it was my father who I was interviewing, but I did lack the speed to write down the responses in time. I felt as if interviewing was a skill I’ve had in me as I felt very natural speaking to my interviewee and understanding him. I would like to interview someone else that’s not related to me if these skills were just because I was interviewing someone I know. If I had the chance to do it over again I would bring a recorder along so I could record the interview so I wouldn’t worry if I missed something important. After the interview he made me realized yet again that communication will be a huge factor in my career. As it is a big factor it is not one that I’m worry about as I’m a very friendly person and a social one as well. The interview assignment has helped me get prepare for my future as I know a couple of things about my career field. I know it’s a travel heavy career, one that makes a great amount of money, as well as help people and it’s a career that’s future proof.
