To Abort Or Not To Abort?….That Is The Question
For my synthesis essay, I chose one of the most controversial and heat raising topics of the modern day. I chose abortion. I chose this topic because I’m very both-sided on the aspects of this argument. I don’t know which side to take because both sides make very good arguments. First of all, I don’t believe a life should taken because of a mother’s mistake but at the same time I don’t believe that somebody’s life should be ruined because of a small mistake. I also believe, according to my research, that aborted fetus’ can contribute a lot to modern science, such as stem cell research. But at the same time, I don’t think you should abort babies for scientific research. Most doctors these days are all for abortions because some people just aren’t responsible enough to take care of the baby. A baby is a sacred living being that should be cared for to the fullest extent and everybody knows a sixteen year old girl isn’t cut out for that yet. I think this makes perfect sense but I still believe taking a life is wrong. Most of the opponents of this argument are religious people that feel the same way as me about taking a life but some of these people are way too liberal to see the benefits in keeping abortion around. My thoughts are constantly jumping from one side to another on this heated topic, so I’m going to analyze both sides to see what I really think is morally right. First, let’s take a look at the history of abortion and how all of this controversy started.

Abortion is when a pregnancy is terminated. This could happen naturally or on purpose. Natural abortions are caused for a variety of reasons, some in which the fetus does not develop normally, or if the mother has an injury or disorder that would prevent the birth of the child (Abortion Law, 35).
Most people refer to the naturally occurring abortions as miscarriages. Other abortions are purposely committed to prevent the birth of a child. These abortions are done because the pregnancy is not wanted, or the pregnancy will endanger the woman’s health. The practice of abortion dates back to ancient times. Pregnancies were terminated through a number of methods, including the administration of herbs, the use of sharpened implements, the use of abdominal pressure, and other techniques. The first recorded abortion case is from the ancient Egyptian texts written in 1550 BC (Potts, 406).
Also, an ancient Chinese record shows the number of dynasty leaders and royal officials who had abortions in China between the years 500 and 515 BC. According to Chinese legend, ancient Chinese healers prescribed the use of mercury to abort babies 5000 years ago (Potts, 406).
Many of the methods employed in early and primitive societies were non-surgical. Physical activities like strenuous labor, climbing, paddling, weightlifting, or diving were common physical techniques that were so strenuous on the body that they killed the baby. Others included the use of herbs that make you sick, starvation, extracting blood, pouring hot water onto the abdomen, and lying on a heated coconut shell. The ancient Islams even had ways of birth control (Riddle, 25).
Since we’ve gone over abortions long history, let’s take a look at the different sides of argument for this topic.
There are many people who support abortion and know the benefits that abortions can give to people in society. Many of these reasons can save a teenage girl’s life and still contribute to modern science at the same time. First of all, nearly all abortions take place in the first couple of months of pregnancy, when the fetus cannot exist independent of the mother. The fetus is attached by the placenta and umbilical cord, its health is dependent on her health, and cannot be regarded as a separate person as it cannot exist outside her womb. For example, a fetus doesn’t have emotion or personhood because it has not yet been born. So we ask this question, is it murder to kill something that isn’t fully alive yet? All pro-abortionists use this as their main argument. Second of all, women’s health and adoption are big issues too. It is a proven fact that abortion isn’t a dangerous procedure. 88% of women that have abortions leave the doctor’s office perfectly fine for the rest of their lives. Also, many anti-abortionists say that there is no reason for abortion because the mother can put it up for adoption. Sure, they can do that, but statistics show that less than 3% of all mothers choose to give their baby up for adoption after conceiving it.
... On the other side, anti-abortionists are primarily interested in protecting the life of a child. Believing the fetus is a person, one ... is required. Basically, pro-abortion focuses on a woman's rights and anti-abortion focuses on a fetus' rights (Rudy 128). Religions ... . There are two sides of the abortion issue, pro-choice (for abortion), pro-life (against abortion). It is essential that everyone have ...
Another great argument for pro-abortion is what a fetus can do for the world of science. An aborted fetus has something very technologically advanced and valuable to the scientific and medical world. They contain stem cells. Stem cells have incredible value because they are unborn cells that can develop into anything (Edmonds, 447).
Doctor’s can use these cells for many things such as organ transplants, a cure for Parkinson’s and many other medical advances (Edmonds, 447).
Stem cell research is an incredible study that can save the lives of thousands of people. However, harvesting these cells and the way doctors extract these cells have stirred up large amounts of controversy. Most countries have banned this study and named it illegal, immoral and unnecessary. Let’s take a look at what the anti-abortionists have to say.
Many anti-abortionists make great, heated arguments against the act of abortion. First of all, life begins at conception. Abortion is very similar to murder because it is the act of taking a human life. Abortion goes against the commonly accepted idea of the sanctity of human life and no civilized society gives the right for someone to intentionally harm or take the life of another human without punishment (Abortion Law, 35).
... on it by the painful abortion procedures. Abortionist doctor admits that seeing the abortion of the baby on the ultra sound bothered ... approximately 40 millions unborn babies have been killed by abortion! ! ! Statistic shows America kills more human lives each year than she ... being deserves all the rights that among these are: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (Thomas Jefferson). Therefore ...
Second of all, anti-abortionists argue that abortion causes medical complications and that adoption is an ideal alternative to parenthood. Abortion can cause ectopic pregnancy, increased chance of miscarriage, and pelvic inflammatory disease (Martin, 836).
Also, 1.5 million American families so there will be no unwanted children. Even if the situation of rape or incest is proposed to an anti-abortionist, they will still be against it because it punishes the unborn child, not the rapist. Also, the anti-abortionists argue that because tax dollars are used to fund abortion and stem cell research, than abortion is economically wrong too. They think it’s wrong that our hard-earned money goes into murdering babies and stem cell research from the dead fetus.
So what if a young, fifteen year old girl that has no life experience gets pregnant? Anti-abortionists have no sympathy for these girls. They believe that if you are responsible enough to have sex, than you are responsible enough to take care of a baby, no matter what your age. These anti-abortionists don’t even have sympathy for rape victims, they think abortion is just flat-out wrong. Also, abortions can cause psychological pain and stress (Martin, 836).
For example, the thought of killing your baby because you can’t take proper care of it can really affect some people. These thoughts can cause signs of depression and even anxiety in younger women. So abortions are immorally wrong and cause health problems, does this mean we should just completely outlaw abortion?
After looking at both sides of the heated debate on abortion, I have come to my conclusion. I am definitely more pro-choice and not against abortion at all. After analyzing both sides of the argument, I have to ask myself what I would personally do in a situation like this. I know that millions of people around the world, including myself, are not suitable and do not have enough life experience to raise a child. There’s no way I could raise a baby in the present life I’m living. Also, I think the anti-abortionists are a bunch of ignorant and conservative people who do not realize that an abortion can save a mother’s life and the baby’s life. For example, the mother might be fourteen years old and the baby just can’t grow up like that. Another reason why I have a problem with the anti’s is that they do not realize the amount of help that stem cells can bring to the world. Stem cell research could save thousands of lives by providing incredible medical advances. I also agree with pro-abortionists when they talk about how a fetus is not quite alive yet, therefore it isn’t murder. The fetus hasn’t quite developed emotions and personhood, but most importantly, the fetus does not know what is going on. The adoption part of the argument sounds ridiculous to me too. Only 4% of mother’s that go through the whole pregnancy give the babies up for adoption. After all that pain and labor, I wouldn’t want to give the child up either. So you see, I’m a solid pro-choice person who is not against abortion. I think that freedom of choice, the basis of our society, is more important than what the anti-abortionists say. Lastly, the benefits of abortion definitely outweigh the risks, in my opinion. I support pro-choice to the fullest.
... would make abortion a form of murder. Murder is classified as taking another human life. The baby that is ... FROM? In 1990, there were nearly four hundred abortion bills were that were introduced to forty-one legislatures ... is up to the woman. Someone who is pro-life would say that it is murder no matter ... life, she is making the choice to murder another human. A person who believes in the pro-choice ...
