The Green Machine |
The vice president of Chevrolet Global Marketing and Strategy Chris Perry said that Chevrolet Green Zone will provide solar charging stations at their dealerships as their commitment to renewable energy projects. The American Chevrolet in Modesto, California and at Al Serra Auto Plaza in Grand Blanc, Michigan dealerships will be the first United States dealerships to have solar-powered electric charging stations. They are calling these solar canopies the ” green zone”. Each solar canopy generates enough electricity for up to 4,500 charges per vehicle annually. They are investing $7.5 Million in Sunlogics, a solar panel manufacturing and development company that will supply the panels and install the dealer charging stations. Both American Chevrolet and Al Serra Chevrolet have partnered with Sunlogics for the installation of their Green Zones. Chris Perry said that just one of these canopies provides enough renewable energy to power two to three homes per year or more than 25 percent of a dealership’s energy consumption. He said that they will put a lot of power back into the grid. Companywide, GM said that 1.4 percent of its U.S. plants’ energy consumption comes from renewable resources, and it is one of the leading users of renewable energy in the manufacturing sector. General Motors is planning to double its solar output globally from 30 megawatts to 60 megawatts by 2015.
... photovoltaic efficiency represents the percentage of the solar radiation energy that can be transformed into charge-carrier pairs. At present, monocrystalline (single-crystal ... ), polycrystalline (semi crystalline) and amorphous silicon (Si) solar cells ...
Renewable energy makes good business sense; it helps to reduce the impact of the manufacturing industry on the environment. GM is the auto industry’s leading user of renewable energy. GM is also working on towards profiting from the fast growing solar business. The 2011 Chevrolet Volt ranks 2 out of 21 Upscale Midsize Cars. GM vision is to be the world leader in transportation products and related services. It wants to earn customer‘s trust and enthusiasm through continuous improvement driven by integrity, teamwork and innovation of GM people. GM has developed their strategy while facing many uncertainties regarding new alternative car technologies. General Motors, Working on Energy Efficiency with going “green”, going big General Motors is doing everything it can to cut down energy costs. I think this investment will help Gm to bring cost down and their bottom line up. With GM being such a large corporation and having so many different brands and locations it will be hard to go completely green, but with all the strides they are taking to conserve energy at their facilities and by producing the vehicles that conserve fossil fuels and reduce emissions someday GM will be completely green company. I think this is what the company needs to do to become competitive in this new market. Hopefully they come out with some cars that are low priced and get good gas mileage so they can compete with some of those foreign powerhouses.
