fast food is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. While any meal with low preparation time can be considered fast food, typically the term refers to food sold in a restaurant or store with low quality preparation and served to the customer in a packaged form for take-out/take-away (“Fast”).
Fast food can be found everywhere in daily life. From pie, sandwich, pizza, noodles, and kebabs to the “American” fast foods such as burgers, hot dog, ice cream cones, and ice tea (“Fast”).
Like it or not, America has grown to be a fast-food nation. People have been trying to avoid fast-food business and try to eat healthy, but they forgot what a fast food business means. A fast food business is any restaurant “that dispenses food, to stay or to go, and that has a limited menu, items prepared in advance or prepared or heated quickly, no table orders, and food served in disposable wrapping or containers” (Severson F1).
This definition can include school cafeterias, dine-in buffets, and other places that people cannot avoid. One statistic of fast food consumption in America is “an average of 159 fast food meals each year” per person (Aicardi).
This shows that even though fast food has been labeled with bad reputation, people know the true benefit behind it all such as health benefit, convenient, and affordable price.

First, the impact of fast food on someone’s health is in question. One of the benefits is the satisfactory calories that a person gets from fast food. A single meal from fast-food restaurants contains enough calories to satisfy a person’s caloric requirement per meal (NIH).
This condition makes the person feel full; therefore, he will not be snacking for the rest of the day. It is also important to remember that the consumption of fast food itself cannot be accompanied with salad dressing or mayonnaise included in the meal. Instead, the salad dressing or mayonnaise should be “on the side” and used sparingly so they will not affect the calorie count as much (NIH).
Although almost all research shown that fast foods increase the possibility of obesity for a person, this research can be argued with research that is more recent by Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an annual telephone health survey of the adult population of the US and the 2002 U.S. Economic Census in which researchers examine the relationship between restaurant availability and weight status in 544 U.S. counties. This resulted in over 700,000 BRFSS respondents, representative of approximately 75% of the 2002 U.S. population. The researchers found that a higher total restaurant density is significantly associated with lower weight status (Elsevier).
The research proves that eating out actually helps keep Americans’ diet in check because Americans are aware of the calories that they eat. Another research project also points out that fast food restaurants make people more aware of what they eat instead their eating at a restaurant that claims to be a healthy restaurant. Having the idea that the main food is healthy, consumers then chose beverages, side dishes, and desserts containing up to 131% more calories than the “healthy” main course. Also mentioned in the study, the “healthy” main course already contains 50% more calories than the “unhealthy” one (University).
Another reason to consume fast food is that fast food is convenient. Americans eat fast food because it is easy and allows them to do other things besides staying in the kitchen (“Morgan”).

The packaging of fast food makes it easy to be consumed inside the car, giving busy workers more time to concentrate on their work and less time to be worried about their nutrition. It is easier to prepare than, for example, a frozen dinner. Consumers just need to throw this food on the microwave for three minutes, and the food is ready to be served. Another example of the convenience of fast food is school cafeterias. With the demand of offering students a wide variety of food served fast, “schools choose to serve fast food such as nachos, burritos, burgers, French fries, chicken strips, etc., which has always been students favorite and can be served in a wink of an eye” (Fridie).
Fast foods are quick to serve its food because the restaurant, or the food provider company, cooks with the big grill and deep fryer that can serve many foods rapidly (“Help”).
Another example of fast-food convenience is the operation hours of the restaurant; some fast food restaurants open late and some others stay open even twenty-four hours a week.
The last reason fast food is a good product is that it is cheap. With a dollar menu offered in most fast food chains and the school is offering food in cafeterias for two dollars, including salad, fruit, and milk, make fast food easier on the consumer’s pocket. Parents say that cooking delicious food within their own budgets “is difficult because of the prohibitive cost of groceries” (Harder).
Knowing all these benefits, the reason why people do not eat fast food is hard to understand. Fast food has become as American as baseball; it is part of America’s pop culture. Not to consume it will be like denying one’s identity as an American.
