How much has women’s social status changed from the 1930s to 2014? It has changed quite a lot. Women were not allowed to do quite a lot of things in the past. For example, they were not allowed to have a proper job and were only allowed to stay at home, do housework and teach children. Since the feminist movement, there are absolutely more chances for women to succeed in modern society. There are two female writers who wrote about their experiences or suggestions of fighting against stereotypes from men. The first writer is called Virginia Woolf. She wrote an article called “Professions of Women”. In that article, she wrote about the restrictions and prejudices that female writers experienced and how she fought against them. She used an imaginary character called “Angel in the House” to refer to one of the difficulties that she finally overcame.
There is another female writer who wanted to eliminate the unhealthy effects for young girls. She wrote an article called “Bonfire of the Disney Princesses”. In her article, she wrote about the wrong values, which was to be a useless people in the future, which Disney Princesses pass to young girls and the unhealthy effect that they may have. She emphasized that those wrong values that may do potential damages to young girls. As a summary, she appealed the parents to gather together and fight against the Disney Princesses. The restrictions and prejudices that women suffered from have many close connections with men. Men had discriminations on women in the past and although women fought and eliminated most of them, some still exist now. They thought women had no right to have some kinds of jobs. However, as the feminism developments, the social status of women had been greatly developed and young girls can have much higher dream than before.
The Term Paper on Cosmo Girl Articles Young One
Periodicals found today on news stands differ greatly from those of the late nineteenth century. While periodicals of the nineteenth century such as "The Girl's Own Paper" focus on self-improvement in terms of living up to societies expectations, today's magazines tend to focus on the individuals self-improvement. Although "The Girl's Own Paper" highlights ways in which the young reader can ...
However, although women can express their own ideas, which they could not before, young girls today still face many difficulties and many unhealthy attractions. In the past, women who are born in a common family even could not express their own thoughts through writing. In Woolf’s article, she wrote about how women writers in her time were restricted to write about their own thoughts. She used “Angel in the House” to metaphor this kind of restriction. It means not only the wrong thoughts in other people’s minds, but also the thought in Woolf’s head. She wrote, “Had I not killed her she would have killed me. She would have plucked the heart out of my writing. For, as I found, directly I put pen to paper, you cannot review even a novel without having a mind of your own, without expressing what you think to be the truth about human relations, morality, sex”(317).
It is more difficult to change one’s own thought than change others’. It was quite difficult for Woolf to beat it, for the origin of the problem was so difficult to find.
Even though she find it, it was still very hard to eliminate it. Although women are now allowed to write on their own mind, there are still many difficulties for young girls to overcome in modern society. One of the biggest difficulties that young girls should overcome nowadays is the unhealthy meaning of the Disney Princesses. Ehrenreich discussed the worthlessness of those Disney Princesses and claimed the bad effects that young girls will have. She wrote, “Disney like to think of the princesses as role models, but what a sorry bunch of wusses they are. Typically, they spend much of their time in captivity or a coma, waking up only when a Prince comes along and kisses them”(271).
Disney wanted to gather the Princesses together and make money by selling the products of the Princesses. But they did not think about the deeper meaning of those princesses.
As Ehrenreich wrote, Disney Princesses do nothing in the story. Therefore, if young girls listened to the story and thought they can be a princess, do nothing and wait for a man go make her happy, they will not study well and neither will they work and live well. Influenced by the Disney Princesses’ thoughts, some of them will be lazy in the future. Both of the writers found out the harm that those two characters had. Both Disney Princesses and “Angel in the House” are harmful to women. Disney Princesses wanted little girls to be lazy and wait for their princes in their life and “Angel in the House” told Woolf to hide herself inside as men thought. The Disney Company had gathered the princesses and added some new things to them, which are harmful. And the restrictions on woman have been existed for quite a long time before Woolf broke it. Therefore, it will take great efforts to eliminate them.
The Term Paper on The Diary of a Young Girl Reflection Paper
Everyone of us has its character that either being suppressed or kept in the deepest muddle of ourselves. For a young girl like Anne Frank, writing and sharing the highlighted events in her life during their refuge in the “Secret Annex” located behind a shelf of books in Mr. Otto Frank’s office, Anne’s father, has evidently showcased the distress, longing, hunger, agony, merriment, love, ...
Women in modern society not only face the difficulties of unhealthy attractions, some restrictions for female are not reduced as time goes by. They are even stronger and more difficult to overcome. In the past, women even could not have some kinds of jobs. Woolf described two difficulties that she experienced when she wanted to be a writer. The first was to kill the “Angel in the House”, to write about her own thoughts. And she wrote about the second barrier, “But the second, telling the truth about my own experience as a body, I do not think I solved. I doubt that any woman has solved it yet. The obstacles against her are still immensely powerful-and yet they are very difficult to define”(318).
At that time, women did not feel they have enough freedom to write. Why they cannot overcome it? It is mostly because of man. Man had been dominated women from ancient times.
The mind that woman are not as good as man is deep in both man and woman’s mind. Therefore it will be very hard for woman to change it. Even such a brave and strong woman like Woolf, who fought to write about her own thought successfully, still would not tell the truth. In spite of telling the truth, young women face some new kinds of negative influence. One of the examples is about sex. Ehrenreich wrote about her opinion about the misleading information that Disney Princesses transfer to young girls. She wrote that Disney Princesses are becoming sexier and sexier, which may mislead the young girls’ opinion about sex. And she wrote about her own opinion on how to treat this problem, “It may be old-fashioned to say so, but sex-and especially some middle-aged man’s twisted version thereof-doesn’t belong in the pre-K playroom. Children are going to discover it soon enough, but they’ve got to do so on their own”(272).
The Essay on Future Girl: Young Women in the Twenty-first Century by Anita Harris
Early nineteenth century signaled the rise of women from the prevailing gender-biased tradition, culture and societal roles. The chief objectives of women during this period were liberation from the patriarchal structure of society, reformation on women’s rights and access on different kinds of opportunity such as in workplace, political affairs and involvement in economic development. During this ...
As the Disney Princesses wear some sexy clothes, young girls may get to imitate them.
They may learn to make up and try some sexy clothes. No one wants to see this situation. The problem is not only this simple. This wrong concept may influence these young girls’ other values and finally can do harm to their life. They may focus on hoe they like like when they go to job and pay less attention on their work. They may expose their bodies rather than use their intelligence to get a promotion. And men may also be attracted by those kind of women and continue enable women to dressing provocatively. This exposure of body and skin can make some people in society feel uncomfortable because they are not used to it or seem it as an inappropriate sexual manner. Ehrenreich suggests that being too sexy may also cause criminal issues. If these two examples are put together, conclusions can be drew that women still face some more severe and tougher problems to overcome.
In order to make men and women to have fair competition in the future, parents should teach and influence these young girls when they are young. They need to try their best to change and educate their children. Although it is impossible to change their mind totally in only one generation in decades, if everyone in the world all make every effort to do that, it will finally be completed one day. Woolf wrote about the restrictions for women when they wanted to have a job in 1930s. She wrote, “Even though the path is nominally open-when there is nothing to prevent a woman from bring a doctor, a lawyer, a civil servant-there are many phantoms and obstacles, as I believe, looming in her way”(319).
She meant that although every job seems to be open to all women, some men who still have stereotypes would reject women to have the job. There is a term called “glass ceiling” and it means an unseen obstacle that prevents women from higher level of position. It can be predicted that if the society failed to solve the problem, the ceiling will be harder and harder to break.
The Essay on Women And Men Communicate Differently
Women and Men Communicate Differently The process of neo-Liberal dogmas, such as celebration of diversity and elimination of sexism, being showed up peoples throats, brought about a situation, when employment policies correspond less and less to the objective reality of interaction between genders at workplace. Men and women are expected to execute their professional duties with the same ...
People who have the stereotype of women need to be aware the harm of the “glass ceiling”. Men should be aware that women can do things better in some areas; women should feel brave enough to compete against men. There are not only problems for grown-up women, young girls should also be educated. Young girls should be educated that exposing their beautiful bodies is not a proper way to succeed. They need to shouw their intelligence to others in order to get praise from them. Women should get promoted for their intelligent work rather than attracting other men. Ehrenreich wrote in her article to appeal to all the parents to ban Disney Princesses from their young girls. She wrote, “Let’s face it, no parents can stand up against this alone. Try to ban the Princesses from your home, and you might as well turn yourself in to Child Protective Services before the little girls get on their Princesses cell phones”(272).
She appealed all parents to kill the Disney Princesses in their children’s daily life because those Princesses had unhealthy meanings that may do harm to their children.
However, not only should parents ban the Disney Princesses, everyone in the society should help with that .If only parents banned them, their children may also see them in other environments, like the teachers may talk about them and they may see the advertisements at the bus stop. They will be curious and want to hear the story. And when they grow up they will still face the same question. Therefore, it is essential for parents to educate their girls that inner beauty is true beauty, showing their bodies to others can only have few success, showing their smart mind to succeed is a way that can lasts forever. Men had always being the character to suppress women through history. Women strived for their status and rights and they had great progress. However, there are still few areas that they need to fight for. Women should value the achievements that they have already got, focus on improving their intelligence rather than just making their body and skin beautiful, compete against men and win the final battle.
