Mandatory Attendance Policy as a Negative Impact
The question as to whether or not attendance should be mandatory remains unanswered throughout many universities in North America. A mandatory attendance policy would not guarantee academic success for all students. Promoting mandatory attendance discourages independent thinking, self-discipline and overrides their freedom. It is unrealistic to assume all students can attend every class and have the same learning styles. Lastly, mandatory attendance takes away from the learning environment in classrooms. As adults and independent thinkers, university students should have the option as to whether or not they attend class.
Attending university is supposed to signify a new found freedom to make important choices regarding education. Allowing optional attendance should not be regarded as encouragement of irresponsibility but rather as an opportunity for students to realize that succeeding academically requires more than just attending lectures. If a mandatory attendance policy were to be imposed, this entire idea would be demolished. The transition from high school to university symbolizes adulthood, and as adults students attain the freedom to make their own decisions in regards to attending classes. From this, students gain the skill to both manage and prioritize their time. Academic success will not be found through mandating attendance, but rather through giving students the opportunity to make their own decisions. If a student is required by a higher authority to attend class, does that promote or discourage self-discipline? This policy encourages the control of one individual over another, rather than self-discipline. It teaches students that if attendance is important in the future, someone will mandate it. Success in school will be attained by students only through trial and error using their own judgment, not through being mandated to go to class.

If students become dependent upon their professors, they will lose the ability to seek information and learn on their own. By demanding that students attend every class, we are taking away their right to make their own decisions and learn from their mistakes. Mandatory attendance enforces the idea that students can advance simply by showing up to class. However, in the real world individuals are measured and rewarded by how they perform and what they can accomplish on their own. Imposing a mandatory attendance policy in universities is both unrealistic and burdensome for both students and professors. Assuming that every student will achieve academic success, simply by mandating attendance is impractical. The student communities in universities consist of a wide variety of individuals, each that have different lifestyles, backgrounds and learning styles. University students are adults, who have the ability to prioritize their time and many aspects of their own lives. Some students have jobs they must maintain in order to simply afford going to school, while others have families they need to care for. Mandatory attendance does not directly correlate with academic success for every student, as some simply do not have the ability to attend every class. The vast majority of university students are those who attend at their own free will. These students generally want to gain knowledge and succeed academically and thus don’t need much persuasion to go to class. As adults, students are at an age where they are capable of making rational decisions based on opportunity costs of their own time. Whether students are using their in class time to study, finish an assignment, go to work or simply to relax, they are fully aware of the consequences that come with missing lectures. Students who require extra help will make the effort to attend class, where those who do not will quite possibly still attain the same level of understanding as their peers. Not all students who want to succeed in school find class attendance as a necessary aspect of school in every given situation. In addition, enforcing a mandatory attendance policy assumes that all students have the same learning style. Not all students are auditory learners whom attain the most knowledge by sitting in class whilst listening to a professor speak. Students all have different study habits and learning techniques, some attain information more efficiently on their own reading from a textbook. Kinesthetic learners will likely not find themselves enhancing their academic performance by attending every class. A policy mandating attendance is not in the best academic interest of all students.
Enforcing a compulsory attendance policy negatively impacts students whom voluntarily choose to attend class. The majority of students that do not attend class are generally those whom tend to be disruptive and tardy. These are the students who will distract their peers who have gone to class in order to further their understanding of the material being taught. If a policy were to be put in effect it would place students with little academic motivation in the same learning as those striving for higher academic success. In class, students are given the opportunity to ask questions and raise ideas in order to further understand the material and prepare for examinations. With optional attendance, students who find themselves in need of extra help can attend class, whereas those who do not can use their time elsewhere. A mandatory attendance policy would in turn have professors spending more effort on classroom management, negatively affecting their teaching ability. Effort expended on ensuring courses are relevant, fascinating and engaging is far more beneficial for all students. If a course is compelling, students are more likely to attend and value the lessons that are delivered, attaining and understanding more information. This notion is more likely to enhance academic performance than forcing students to sit through a dull lecture. Mandatory attendance negatively impacts both the learning environment for several students, as well as the course content.
