My Freelancer Life
Have you ever worked as a freelancer before? It was becoming both rich work experience and great fortune of life to me in last summer. The nature of this kind of job has a big difference to my other part-time working styles, just liked to being a waitress in a restaurant or a seller in a clothing store. It was my first time to be a freelancer for iPhone game designing, actually I was just use what I have learnt in a foundational animation program in Capilano University. Is was totally an exciting and meaningful thing to do when I finished the spring semester in the school. I worked with my friend and his long term client, we made a team for the whole work development. We were settled as dream chasers to make the goal for the game project just started with our lovely conceptions and easy-going ideas. My friend, James, who has the abilities in gaming and modeling design, and also engineering skills, ttamsesjust invited me to join his school-off “freelancer company” to create a cellphone game for making money and have fun in the summer time.
Once I have tried to create my personal art portfolios and resume for seeking a work in my animation working field in a long time but even no one just paid attention to me; therefore, I was so disappoint and upset due to doubting myself with skills. However, after then I found out James to have a chat about his experiences. As I think the result was, the opportunity really came to me later, he was highly recommended me to try the job I have never been tasted of and I was going to have the interest to do with that. He was the one who always to follow his heart to do whatever he likes and dose not much care how much money he would make. So at that time he and his team just needed one like me to draw and design for the game development. Days after thinking about his words, I decided to join with them and I was so glad to meet with his clients (or I used to call his friends, sounded more heartily).

He took me to his team and introduced me to the other two “computer geeks”, which worked on programing and coding in a very professional way. At we first meeting they looked pretty rigorous because I am just a little girl, however, after several talks, they found me well skilled in art then they looked me in new eyes. I know everything was hard in the beginning, I was a beginner for freelancer and no co-working experience in a team before, so everything for me was undiscovered mysterious, it just I opened a door and did not realize what was going to happen in the room, I got my strong drawing and designing skill but did not know what could I handle for this job. I looked at the working schedule, all the vocabulary were new to me such as characters for three viewing, color testing, and bug fixing etc. James taught me how to deal with them, he was a great teacher out of the school, he bring me the plan sheet for the whole game process and pointed out what I need to create that abundant of characters’ conception and sketches for the team to have a review. Therefore I started, I start to work and think the characters were for two days and nights, I just got lots of ideas to show out and drew many drafts for the one in all of the characters, they took me time and made me tired for continuing to work.
However, when I bring them back to the team, they stared at my drawing and just refused them and returned to me, they said that just not their favorite styles and not their wants. Holy at that moment, I felt so hurt and tears in my eyes, why they so tough to me? It did not make senses that was trying so hard and elaborated on those design and I thought there must going to be a large field of choices for they to choose one the best. Nevertheless they just refused all of them by the reason of they did not like. I was confused to carry on, because I was really not sure what could I do to change and pass the first steps of this job. I met with James and told him that those guys did not admit my stuff and I confused to continue to keep working. James just said to me: things always do not go like your ways. So what I do is just change my mind to satisfy the needs of others even though I think that would not be fine to myself. I really lacked the ability to seek the needs from others and listen to their advisements. Those would hold back my steps to get improvements I thought. I really need several times to feedbacks until the recognition and appreciation from the team like a normal working procedures.

I should not be angry and upset on others’ criticisms. When everyone agreed with, so that the project is viable — that is, that the project is worth to do, and the time and cost estimates are credible. Sometimes we all seek of the approvals, from parents, spouses and friends, then when we are at work, we also need approval from our co-workers that is the ability to contribute to the group for game design. When I totally realized I was back to my work to redo and change whatever they wanted. Finally, after several times, I got the all fixed drafts for the characters which all of them wanted. Everyone in the team liked the design I did, I was so proud of myself. From this experience, I completely got how to communicate with others and took patient to change when I was wrong. I proved by myself first and others helped me in the follow steps.
After my drafts passed, stuffs all went fast. I did the three views drawing of the characters on computer and also did the modeling surfacing and 3D turning, those were my own knowledge from school. But in the same time I also learnt new software like Maya and Printer 11. We went all in professional ways and did ourselves areas’ well to make sure whole process could be running in high quality. They were so patient and kind to me when I got problems, they made me moved fast forward to catch on their speeds. In two weeks later, the outline of the game was coming, we began to the final stage of gaming, the testing. We got pleasure and fulfillment from our hard working and finally we did it, although during the process there was lot of problems, things not always went such easy, we needed to fix the every tiny bugs. When I saw my characters appeared on the screen, I felt amazing, unbelievable that was all done by myself. I also responded for all the art creating part of the game and that meant I had the duty for after all.

After testing on the virtual machine, which was really the final step, we fixed all the bugs so we could promise to run it well on the cellphone. Alright, from what I did to this job in my whole summer vocation, it kept me busy and made me live fully each day with my working experiences and learnt how to get patient to whatever people needs.
