My pursuit of this career comes from many years of being in management for several industries and my partnership with a former colleague who is in this field. The opportunity to work closely with someone in the field of project management has given me a large interest in this profession. I seek a more detailed perspective of the field and propose that through my research I will provide my readers information on a field that is not always of use in many industries but is a very fun and exciting occupation.
Through the discussion of this field, I hope to provoke an increased interest in this field as not many pursue it. As one will see, I have highlighted job requirements, essential skills, and education requirements as specific elements needed to pursue a career in Project Management. Some of the benefits of having this career are having the potential to be a respected leader within the profession, monetary concessions, opportunities for research in this field, and a sense of accomplishment within the community.

One should maintain a collection of research to make the most appropriate choices in education, experience, and career choices. This paper will hopefully give some insights to how individuals already in their careers began to select those careers, how long they have sustained in those careers, what factors attracted them to those careers, and what educational backgrounds they have. Before selecting a career, it is always beneficial to have a career interest highlighted.
This paper will provide some background information on the skills and job description of a career in the field of Project Management. A set of simple instructions will assist in pursuing this career choice, but can be mirrored to pursuing any career. Introduction As a high school senior, one now faces the inevitable task of deciding what to do with the rest of their life. Does one choose the road of continuing education to pursue a degree in a chosen field? Does he, or she go right into the job market and work their way into a career?
A survey conducted on five individuals of their career selections provided interesting results. Of the five surveyed, only one went into the workforce right out of high school. Two pursued higher education and received degrees in their chosen fields. One pursued higher education, but did not finish. The career choices ranged from food service, retail, business, to professionals in the fields of Criminology and Information technology. The amount of time spent in the individual careers ranged from six months to 10-years and some remain employed with their first career choice, others have gone on for more attractive reasons.
The results of this survey were meant to identify what made these individuals choose their careers and how they pursued those career choices. As high school seniors, there are many opportunities to pursue. I would like to highlight a field that I have found interesting; the field of Project Management. What specifically does a project manager do? Emily Carr (2007), a design professional, says this is hard question since the field of Project Management is most often not clearly defined; however this is also what makes being a project manager fun and exciting. 1) Choosing a career in Project Management can require an educational background in business, information technology or both. One who is seeking a career in this field should inherently possess, meaning qualities that one already demonstrates, essential skills that will contribute to the success in project management. Project Management is the ability to plan successfully, organize, and manage resources to implement the completion of project goals and objectives. A project manager can be considered the project owner. A project can be anything from designing a network for a software company, to the construction of a hospital. The project manager is responsible for the inception, meaning the start of, to the completion of each project. The project manager leads the team of individuals associated with any project. These individuals usually are clients, contractors or civic committees and the project manager acts as a “hub”, meaning the central person in charge of the success of the project. A project manager manages and facilitates, rather than dictates.
They are largely responsible for assembling a team that will play well together. A working relationship between all the interested parties will be the main focus of a project manager’s job. Managing the personalities is also a huge part of any project manager’s position. The project manager successfully maintains these relationships through coaching and encouragement; building a rapport with the teams and driving the levels of enthusiasm high. Another aspect of any project manager’s job is being a strategic leader. An understanding of the projects goals are a must.
The project manager must have the big picture in mind from the beginning of the project and should be able to lead effectively; since he, or she is not creating the work. The final piece to the puzzle of being a Project Manager, knowing the role and how much technology will play a part. In a journal article by the Project Management Institute, author Vittal S. Anantatmula (2008) discusses how the ever-changing technology affects the job of a Project Manager. He states, “Notwithstanding the importance of technology, research has shown that it is difficult to associate the use of technology with business performance and the absence of such relation can be extrapolated (inferred) to project performance as well. (3) In conclusion, as high school seniors the options for career choices are numerous. How one pursues those options determines the success of getting into the career field that one may choose. By highlighting some information about how career choices can be selected, giving an example of an interesting career and how to achieve it, I hope that this will assist in considering the options carefully and choosing wisely.
