Beauty The question of beauty is a philosophical one which is not easy to answer. The Gage dictionary defines beauty as good looks. It is something that is pleasing to ones eyes or something that gives pleasure. However, beauty is not only a physical peculiarity. There exists a common view that it is also a spiritual trait. It is what people have inside, their inner world or appearance.
Thus, when external beauty is supported with internal, it creates the harmony of a persons character and the vision of a truly beautiful identity. Only in harmony, beauty can be really the best characteristic while the absence of this harmony makes beauty become the worst trait of ones character. Hardly anyone can get a single answer to this question. This is probably because there is no single definition of such an abstract notion. Moreover, each person thinks differently and may get to a completely opposite conclusion. Yet the most obvious answer perhaps is hidden in the conception of external and internal beauty and their interrelation.
The emphasis on external beauty in modern society is greatly demanding. Our society often makes judgments according to someones external beauty without taking into consideration his or her internal qualities. It is enough to recollect just one example from our personal experience to realize that all of us have always acted identically. Havent we paid special attention to someones outer appearance before making the acquaintance of him or her? Isnt it of greater pleasure to associate with a good looking person rather than an ugly or simply untidy individual? It is quite natural because most people enjoy observing beautiful things and beautiful representatives of mankind. Moreover, we even have such a need deeply rooted in our conscience. In order to satisfy this need, people go to art galleries, museums, theatres, visit other countries and their sights, admire natural wonders, etc. Still, external beauty itself cannot contribute to the overall view of a persons beauty. In order to mold the general opinion about someones beauty, external beauty must be enhanced greatly with internal.

One cannot be truly beautiful on the outside unless the beauty of his or her inner self shines through. If a person is full of knowledge, life, respect, love, and kindness, he or she certainly has a beautiful soul. This is called internal beauty. However, when these two sides of beauty harmonize with each other, when they are mutually complementary, such beauty surely can be considered as the best characteristic of any person. Being truly beautiful, people attract others and are somehow exemplary. Unfortunately, such beauty is a quite abstract conception. This is because a person possessing such a trait is an extremely rare phenomenon in our world.
It is natural that beauty cannot be only the best characteristic. There always has to be something opposite. Here we have got the same situation. In contrast to the best characteristic, beauty can be the worst individuals trait as well. In fact, people having this type of characteristic are not as rare as the former. On the contrary, they are a quite widespread phenomenon.
All of us have met them sometime somewhere. If not talking about people who are ugly inside and outside, beauty as the worst characteristic is probably when a person having a beautiful outer appearance, is completely ugly inside. Internal ugliness cannot be noticed at once. However, it can sometimes take five or ten minutes to understand that a person of such a type stands right before you. Internally ugly people are usually spoilt, mean, not bright, or even stupid. It often happens that people become mean (and hence disgusting inside) because of their outer ugliness.

Yet such people just gain sympathy, and do not serve as the example of beauty as worst characteristic simply because they are ugly inside and outside as well. It much worse when people being beautiful and attractive externally, have a dirty soul. Often people beautiful externally use their beauty in order to reach some of their goals making others the victims of deceit. What makes the former to become such identities? Does jealousy, greed or stupidity shape their inner world? It is different for each separate individual. However, they have one thing in common. Their two worlds contradict each other making their external beauty their worst personal trait.
They say that beauty will save the world. Of course, it will. We have a lot of beautiful things in our world which help us to live through all the hardships staying with us all the time in our hearts and our minds. Yet it is hard to imagine what our world could be if all the people had beauty as their best characteristic. Meanwhile, it is not so, and we have to try to be a little bit kinder and pay more attention to each other. At least, one should make efforts to become beautiful inside.
