On October 28, 1955, William Henry Gates, lll, was born. Gates and his two sisters grew up in Seattle, Washington. His late mother was a teacher and his father is a lawyer. Gates went to public school until junior high in which he attended Lakeside School, where he met Paul Allen. In 1968, at the age 13, Gates began programming computers.
Soon afterward, Gates, Allen, and some other students convinced a computer company to give them full access to a new minicomputer; in exchange they would try to find flaws in the system. Gates spent most of his time on the computer figuring out its program language. In 1972, Gates and Allen started their first business. They made car-counting machines for traffic analysis. Gates was attending Harvard in 1975 when he teamed up with Paul Allen again but this time to write a BASIC programming language for the Altair 8800, the first personal computer. That same year Gates, in his junior year, dropped out of college and founded the company, which will make him the richest man in the world, Microsoft. Microsoft, which Gates started with his good friend Paul Allen, who else, was originally a computer programming business. In 1981, Microsoft came out with their first operating system MSDOS, which is now standard on every computer, which they made a deal to make it come with every IBM computer. Other computer companies started using MSDOS also. After their success with MSDOS Gates started to make other kinds of programs like Microsoft?s Word, which is a word processor program. Microsoft expanded rapidly in the 1980s to the 1990s.

Microsoft later came out with the Windows operating system, which is now the most used operating system. Gate?s success continued to grow and in 1987, at the age of 31, he became the youngest self-made billionaire in American history. In 1998 Bill Gates had more than $50 billion, making him the richest person in the world. Bill Gates in the late 1990s had a big problem to face. They were being accused of having a monopoly, and I don?t mean the board game. Microsoft had it where if you have Window?s then you also have Internet Explorer with it. What that is saying is that people wont use the competitors, which include main competitor Netscape. For this the government started a lawsuit and makes more accusations about the company, trying to find more things to use against them. The lawsuit devastated Microsoft?s stock price, it fell dramatically. It cost Microsoft and Bill Gates lots of money. Oh yes, Bill Gates was still rich, he was even still the richest person in the world but the government wanted to see him taken down, well in my opinion they did why else would they not leave him alone. So the government won the lawsuit and Microsoft is supposed to be breaking up into different companies just like AT&T did.
This is still, to this day, not final. Gates has taken this to appeal courts and eventually, I think, the case will get thrown out. This paragraph, this one you are reading, is going to be devoted to my opinion. I think Microsoft is the biggest fair and square. No one came up to Bill Gates and said, ?I am going to get just about the whole world to use your software, and I am going to get it to where you are going to be one of the richest men in the world.? I am pretty sure no one said that, unless he made a deal with the devil, which some people think he has but I doubt he did. According to some sources I have been to while doing research for this report says that if George W. Bush is elected president then he most likely will throw the whole Microsoft monopoly case out and not force Microsoft to break up. I also read that if Bush is elected the stock market will go way up and that would be good for Gates. If the stock market goes up then Microsoft?s stock will go up. If Microsoft?s stock goes up then guess what, Bill Gates will become even richer and so will his life long friend Paul Allen who is the CEO of Microsoft, and not to mention the 3rd richest man in the world.

Gates only threat in the whole richest person in the world race is the owner of the Internet business Oracle who has only $10 billion less that Gates, which in Internet business that is not that hard to get for businesses that are already big. Bill Gates after the whole Microsoft monopoly thing has approximately $64.8 billion dollars, poor guy huh, maybe we should start a collection for him. Bill Gates has all this money and you may be thinking, ?Hey what does Bill Gates do with all that money?? Well I will tell you where some of it goes. He and his wife, Melinda, have given over $21 billion dollars to numerous charities through an organization, which they started together. Here?s an interesting fact, to my knowledge Bill Gates did not give a dime to charity until the IRS started approaching him, just thought that might interest you. Here are a couple of his things Bill Gates has done for charity. He gave $750 million to the Global Fund for Children?s Vaccines, $1 billion to launch the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, and a $200 million program to provide computers and Internet access to public libraries in low-income communities in the United States and Canada. He gave Pacific Northwest a $40 million grant to establish the Sound Families Program, which gives places to live to the homeless.
Now for some up to date info that meets my interests, video games. Bill Gates is now trying to enter the video game market. It is an industry that is very unpredictable and this time I think Bill Gates might fail. If he succeeds in the market, he will become a lot richer. Microsoft is coming out with their own gaming console called the Microsoft X-box. This system is coming up in a terrible time. In this time period of the video game market we have several systems coming out. These systems include Sony?s Playstation 2, which just came out, the Nintendo Game Cube, and the X-box. The X-box is made by Microsoft who has no credibility in the videogame market and they are facing two gaming system giants, three if you count the Sega Dreamcast. The Playstation 2 is Microsoft?s biggest competition. It has the most credibility of all of the systems. You can find one Playstation in every 4 houses says one survey I once saw. In other words Sony has built up gaming consumer?s trust just like Microsoft gained computing consumers. To tell you the honest truth I hope the X-box fails. Microsoft remains to be one of the biggest software developers out there and will probably keep that position for a while now. Bill Gates success will continue to grow and whether you like him, hate him, or can?t stand him he will be known among everyone in the United States. Who knew some computer nerd from Seattle could become world famous just by doing stuff on the computer. It is interesting to me that more people know of him than probably Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. Who knows what his future holds for him. He could become richer; he could become broke and living on the street in a cardboard box, very unlikely. All we know is that because of him technology has changed tremendously. The whole operating system and user interface is different than it would be. Gates and his partner Paul Allen have made their mark in the history books. This concludes my report.
