Casting a Circle Casting a circle is one of the most basic magical acts that a Witch does. Circles are used for rituals and sometimes magical workings. A circle does a number of things. Most importantly, it protects the practitioner (s) from spirits, negative energies, and other nasty things out there. With that in mind, please be sure to practice with extreme care and be sincere in what you are doing.
Abide by the Wiccan Reed and you should be fine. The circle also serves as a sacred place in which to do ritual workings like sabbat celebrations and certain spells. The circle keeps the energy in a contained area so that it can be concentrated and strengthened as much as possible before it goes out to do its job. So without “further ado” here is how… Ok, first things first. Prepare your area.
There are two ways to do this. One walk around the circumference of where the circle will be and sprinkle water to wash the area, or two, water mixed with salt for a stronger purification. Try doing both and stick with which ever works better for you. Now you may cast.
A circle is created with energy, and you are the director of that energy. Make sure you know where the boundaries will be before you cast it and have everything that you are going to use inside of this area because breaking the circle drains a lot of energy and is just not fun to do. Start out by clearing your mind. Next, visualize the energy of nature and the universe mixing with your own, building up inside of you.

Simply see yourself glowing a bright purple or blue. On the other hand, any other color if you feel more comfortable, do whatever you feel is the best way to do it. While you ” re doing this, be sure to imagine a circle forming. Don’t see it as a circle on the ground, but as a giant sphere with you inside. Half of it is above the ground, you are walking on a plane through the diameter, and the other half is below the ground. The circle is cast. Now perform your rite, spell, or ritual inside the circle you have cast. Once done this is how you close your circle.
Pick up your at hame, wand, finger, or whatever you used to cast it and walk to the corner where you started. Point your directional tool at the boundary of the circle and begin to walk counter-clockwise (Towards your left) until you complete the circle. While you ” re walking the circumference, visualize the circle disappearing and the energy flowing back through the tool. When you have finished, say something like, ‘The circle is open, but unbroken.’ You may want to ground, get rid of, the excess energy the circle creates. To do this, put your hands on the ground and let the energy flow into the Earth.
Or you can stand straight and visualize yourself glowing with energy. Take a step back out of the circle and watch it collapse to the Earth where it grounds itself. So, you see, circle casting is not tough at all. It may take a bit of practice to get the circle going strong, and yes, some others may have some big elaborate circle casting technique, but when starting out, simple is best.
