1,051 people were killed on the road in 2011, according to the final statistics1 of the Royal Oman Police. Oman, unfortunately, has continuously recorded a huge leap2 in road accidents and accident- related deaths. Despite the fact that drivers should have a high degree of attention, caution and awareness, we cannot solely blame3 them for every single car accident. To discuss the main causes of car accidents in Oman I will confine4 myself to four main causes which I think behind all car accidents: driving while intoxicated5, mobile phone use, shoddy road maintenance, and maniac6 drivers.
Driving while intoxicated (DWI) is considered to be one of the main causes of car accidents in Oman. Allah, the Almighty, has strongly admonished us not to drink alcohol on many different occasions7 in the Holy Quran. Despite this strong admonishment8, some people insist9 on drinking alcohol and consequently harm themselves and harm others, as well. The second cause that leads to fatal10 accidents is mobile phone use. In fact, modern technology is meant to ease our life in a way that doesn’t cause any inconvenience11 to others. Therefore, making and answering calls, or even worse, text-messaging while driving, distracts the driver’s attention and can result in serious consequences12. Another obvious cause of car accidents is shoddy13 road maintenance. Due to the geographical features of Oman, some roads are rather narrow and sharp and mostly designed to be one-way only. In addition, the number of cars that use the roads is on the increase and that probably causes serious damage to the roads in the long run. One last important cause is maniac drivers. Some drivers, unfortunately, show a total disregard14 for others and think wrongly that they have the right to do whatever they want without worrying much about other road users. This, in fact, is a short-sighted point of view because others simply have the freedom to live a peaceful life. To conclude, in this changeable15 life Omanis cannot do without this means of transport. Nevertheless, driving cars cautiously and ethically16 would, by the grace of Allah, prevent several disasters. The Omani authorities, therefore, have to raise the alarm about car accidents and adopt17 a comprehensive18 strategy to reduce accidents.
