Many people in today’s world may feel out of place, and feel they have little to no control over their life. This influences them to do the funny things they do to make them feel like they are “somebody”, and that they do have some control over their lives. An example of this would be in the classic “school yard bully.” Every school has at least one, and these kids probably have some problems in their family or at home that they are ashamed of and have absolutely no control over. Their low self esteem leads them to play the role of the “tough guy” by picking on others smaller or weaker then themselves, in order to mask who they really are or how they may be feeling. This control over other people makes them feel as if they now have control over their life, and makes them feel like the have a place in life, even if that place is to make others miserable. In the short story On the Right Tack by Dorothy Chisholm the character Kim has a lot in common with the school yard bully. However, this similarity is not that she picks on people like a bully, but in the way that she feels ashamed of her family life and has the need to mask her true self because of this insecurity. Kim feels as if she has no control over her life, and has to take some sort of action to feel in control. Kim tries to hide her true self, because she is ashamed of her background, and lives her life as almost a lie by trying to be accepted into higher culture.

The character Kim has many strong points of view. These views are basically things that she is trying to stay away from because she feels they are lower class, uncultured, and would only hold her back from becoming accepted into a higher class. This makes Kim a very opinionated character. Kim doesn’t like uncultured people, no matter how nice they may be on the inside, “I told Kim I thought Donny was nice but she says, warehouse, talk about downward mobility.” (Page 246).
This shows that Kim feels Donny will not be going anywhere in life, and she doesn’t like him because he reminds her of her past, family life, lack of culture, and success. Therefore, if Donny is just the same as Kim, why should she like him any better. There are a few things that Kim stays away from such as pubs and single bars, “Kim didn’t go to pubs. They’re full of jocks, and girls are just another sport to them she said. She didn’t go to singles bars either. Meat markets, she said, they’re for losers,” (page 246) and a loser is just the type of person Kim doesn’t want to be. When it comes to men Kim is also very opinionated. Kim doesn’t like men with too much muscle, “Too much muscle is gross, she says, and probably means he’s developed his body instead of his brain.” (Page 246).
These men with muscle, Kim feels, do not fit in with the higher, more educated class of men which Kim does want to date because they would be her key into a richer lifestyle.
When it comes to men Kim is a very shallow person. When she finally saw a man that looked like he came out of a glamour magazine she immediately had to have him. He looked educated and dressed classy, but before Kim had even talked to him she had already classified him as a “terrific guy,” (page 244) showing that she is more interested in looks than anything else. Kim has an eye for men that look richer because she knows that if she doesn’t try and marry into a rich lifestyle she will never live one at all.
Despite being shallow and opinionated Kim is very determined to get what she wants. Kim can easily talk people into doing things that she wants them to do. An example of this is found in the following quote: “Kim had been trying to talk me into sharing an apartment… I told Kim I really couldn’t afford and apartment but she said we could buy stuff at the Sally Ann….I figured I could put off my trip to Florida.” (Page 247).

Kim set her mind on moving into an apartment and then easily talked her friend into it, even getting her to give up her trip to Florida. Kim was also very determined to get the guy she wanted. She talked her friend into going to a classy restaurant to try and find this “terrific guy.” Even though they couldn’t afford to go to the restaurant they continued to go just to talk to this guy, “ We kept going to the cafe in Yorkville and sometimes we saw the guy from the Manulife center…” (page 245).
After many weeks of persistent determination Kim did finally get around to asking the guy, Rob, for his phone number.
The reason for Kim’s desire to be accepted into higher class is probably because her childhood was poor, and she is ashamed of her past and family. Their family probably didn’t have it so well, and when Kim left home to be on her own she was reluctant to go back to her old lifestyle. “ Kim liked to go to expensive boutiques to try on clothes,” (page 246) this quote shows Kim is trying to get away from her old lifestyle by trying to act like she lives a higher one. Kim’s real name, in fact, is not Kim at all, “It was Joyce, but she didn’t like it and had everyone call her Kim.” (Page 244).
Kim changing her name is, in some ways, like rejecting her parents. Her parents probably couldn’t give her the kind of lifestyle that would have been comfortable to her, so this probably caused some dislike towards her parents. This leads her to try and get away from her parents and old lifestyle by changing her name. Another example that shows that Kim is ashamed is that she lies to her boyfriend Rob about her family. She does this so he would never have to meet them and know what Kim’s background really was, “It must be tough, he says, for her to be in the city on her own, with no family or anything.”

In summery Kim is a very opinionated, shallow, and determined person. However all these traits come from the fact that she is ashamed of who she is and where she comes from. All her opinions are media driven, “…she talked like that because she read a lot of Glamour and Cozmo magazines,” (page 246) because the media is what shows the lives of higher class people, constantly in the public eye, who Kim feels a need to be exactly like. The reason for this is that Kim grew up feeling out of control of her life, out of place, and ashamed of her family and the only way out of all of it was to try to be accepted into a higher level of living.
