1. What does “intercultural” communication mean to you? In my opinion, intercultural communication is the way people of different cultures, races, ethnicities all communicate. It is also how different countries and cultures act and communicate with each other. About three years ago I worked at as daycare teacher assistant it was a very diverse company. You have all types of people who work there: Caucasian, African Americans, Chinese, Hispanics, and a few Pacific Islanders. At the time I was an assistant for the infant room. There were two teachers assigned to the room and they had one assistant per teacher. One of my co-workees is Hispanic and does not understand English that well. There are times that I needed to communicate with her regarding the babies in the class so she would know what to do in certain situations. I’m order to communicate with her everyone would speak slowly, clearly and I’m short sentences. Most times I would communicate with her by actually showing her what I am trying to say. If communicating to her in this way does not help them I would get one of the girls that speak Spanish to translate to her what I am trying to tell her but that is the last resort way of communicating with her as I try not to depend on the other Spanish speaking girl at work so I can learn how to communicate with her. As far as the Chinese woman, she speaks and understands english but her english is very broken and she speaks so fast. I would have to ask her to repeat herself numerous times when they don’t understand what I am saying I speak slowly and pronunciate everything slowly and show motions to help out.
