This data is then submitted to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program breaks down the data into states, the cities within that state, and numerous other categories.
These categories include population, violent crimes, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, property crimes, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2014).
This paper will compare the burglary crime data from Reno, Nevada and Sparks, Nevada for the years 2005 and 2012. According to the UCR, in 2005, Reno, Nevada, had a population of 204,749 people. According to the UCR, there were 1,916 burglaries reported to law enforcement agencies (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2005).
According to the UCR, in 2005, Sparks, Nevada, had a population of 83,791 people. According to the UCR, there were 740 burglaries reported to law enforcement agencies (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2005).
In 2005, the city of Reno, Nevada had almost three times the population as Sparks, Nevada. However, the UCR data shows that Sparks, Nevada had just fewer than half the burglaries that Reno, Nevada had. According to the UCR, in 2012, Reno, Nevada, had a population of 230,486 people.
According to the UCR, there were 1,633 burglaries reported to law enforcement agencies (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2012).
According to the UCR, in 2012, Sparks, Nevada, had a population of 92,387 people. According to the UCR, there were 609 burglaries reported to law enforcement agencies (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2012).
Once again, in 2012, the city of Reno, Nevada had almost three times the population as Sparks, Nevada. However, the UCR data shows that Sparks, Nevada still had just fewer than half the burglaries that Reno, Nevada had.
According to the UCR, from 2005 to 2012 Reno, Nevada had an increase in population of 25,737 people, yet between those dates Reno, Nevada showed a decrease of 283 burglaries. As for Sparks, Nevada, the UCR data showed an increase of the population of 8,596 people and just like Reno, Nevada, Sparks, Nevada, showed a decrease of 131 burglaries. Although both cities had an increase in population, both had a decrease in burglaries reported to law enforcement agencies. Most would believe that the increase in population would invite more criminal activity to these cities.

This student chose these two cities because this student grew up in Reno, Nevada, and now resides in Sparks, Nevada. In 2005, there was an influx of people from different regions (mostly California) that relocated to the Reno-Sparks area for construction jobs. However, in 2008 our housing market took a hit, much like most of the United States. This student believes that while the new homes brought in families, but the lack of construction work caused most of the workers to leave the area. Also, during this time period there was a large hiring of police officers in both cities.
Therefore, this student believes that the loss of construction jobs, which cause individuals that were here for the money and increase of police presence caused the decrease in burglaries. Conclusion The use of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s UCR is a beneficial tool available to the public and other law enforcement agencies. The UCR can help law enforcement agencies better track and attack criminal activity within their city and state. The UCR can also help individuals with their discussion to relocate to a new city.
