Cultural Assignment The module on public health in a Multicultural Environment created by the National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC) supported through a grant from the Division Research, Training and Education (DRTE) to assist the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) is indicative of a provident and sagacious institution whose goal for the future is to provide equal health opportunity for all people in a community regardless of their sex, racial ethnicity, geographic location and economic status. The modules contained in the series are designed to realize the bureaus initiative to provide equal options and access for all to quality heath care that does not only render efficient services but also support their clienteles needs — a culturally competent environment, which is family centered and community based, and health disparities of whatever nature have been eliminated (full text can be accessed from the NCCC website http:/www.nccccurricula.info).
The module series focus on four content areas which were determined and selected to be important to culturally as well as linguistically competent health care policies and practices— a) Cultural Awareness, b) Cultural Self-assessment, c) The Process of Inquiry — Communicating in a Multicultural Environment, and the last one d) Public Health in a Multicultural Environment. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the fourth content area— Public Health in a Multicultural Environment as to its viability and its effectiveness as a tool in providing professional training that will augment and enhance past and current training methodologies given to health practitioners. The module is not only relevant to public health practices but it has also incorporated in its scope the frequently put aside principles and practices which has something to do with cultural and linguistic competence. With the fast growing multicultural communities across the country, it has been noted that special knowledge, skills and awareness of socio-cultural environment of the client communities is needed by health practitioners in order to deliver quality and effective health care service that is not prejudiced and discriminatory specifically to marginal communities.
