Displacement and Globalization of Cultural Practices
One variable in the equation of life remains constant at all times, change. There are various kinds of change and applications to which it, becoming beneficial or an obstacle to overcome. Cultural practices compliment imagination to make up the scheme of a community or society in any given place in the world. Different regions around the globe hold a diverse set of practices and values that make up unique characteristics to distinguish themselves from other communities in the surroundings. In an individual level, these cultural practices give a person a sense of identity, and when reduced to basic influence, it is the nurturing that composes a person’s character.
popular culture varies greatly from region to region in order to accommodate the desires of the targeted population. The essence of popular culture is a mainstream manifestation of the current situation people live in. South Korea has been subject to affluent foreign influence since the division of Korea following world war two. The United States laid the foundation through various films and shows that were appealing to the population, especially to children. This has evolved to a greater openness to Western influence as well as embracing other Asian cultures.

Cultural traditions have changed the way people eat, talk and entertain themselves in South Korea. Many Koreans now include foods such as pizza, hamburgers, and other Asian foods. Recently, a new dialect has been developed and rising in popularity and use named “Konglish”. This is the result of a fusion of English and Korean to identify newly introduced expressions that have been borrowed mainly from the United States but are not limited to it. The use of this dialect is seen as hip and is openly used in many publications and advertisings. It has been criticized by international critics due to the bad grammar used and the misinterpretation of words by the Korean community. This has also been a contributor to the split culture between South and North Korea because it is only used in the south. This linguistic barrier results in many misunderstanding amongst Koreans themselves and will complicate the integration and uniformity between both nations.
This linguistic emergence has become increasingly important in Korean culture as it has become one of the main methods in which they can reach out to the international community in a way that is more readily accepted. Within South Korea, it shows how the new generations whose influence begun with children cartoon and educational shows have embraced and became increasingly familiar with the American culture and lifestyle.
The rapid technological advancement of this era has motivated South Korea to become one of the nations compromised to improve life quality and cleaner lifestyles through technology. They have recognized the degree to which the world has grown interconnected and have used it in their advantage to base their economy in the technological industry. They are seen as international pioneers in cellular networks and internet related products as improved technologies are developed every year or less. Their technological commitment has come along with a greener lifestyle that will hopefully set an example for many other nations. This is another notable aspect of modern Korean culture that has been borrowed from the American point of view. America has always taken upon itself to try and maintain a relative stability and welfare of the global community, now South Korea is using their resources and innovative spirit to develop products that will benefit the consumer and the earth.

The greatest single idea that was adopted in South Korean culture from the United States is the gift of democracy. This is the only reason why the South Korean sprung from a mainly agrarian economy to one of the wealthiest nations across the globe. They have been more open to foreign ideas and this has also made foreign nations to be more open are sensitive towards them. In my opinion, the support that the United States gave to South Korea harvested into a great nation that will serve humanity and further our knowledge in technological areas that become increasingly important in our daily lives.
The displacement of cultural practices in South Korea can easily be indentified if compared to their sibling nation who has closed its doors to foreign influences and has kept strict propaganda in order to preserve the status quo. They are a single party state and limit cultural expression that doesn’t praise the revolution and the “great leader”. Their culture has developed in the areas of traditional dance and music by maintaining their roots while adapting them to the ideology seeded in the country.
This contrast in cultures has been one of the main reasons why the Korean War is essentially still going on. The clash of ideologies between the traditional, foreign, and modern have created different spheres in which Koreans identify themselves outside their country due to the lack of their unification. North Korea’s foreign relations are relatively calm and limited due to the strict regulation of the internet. This has been a factor in why North Korea is still hostile to the outside world and the opportunities brought by it.
It may seem archaic or useless to the rest of us to hold back from change and avoid what is imminent, but this is the only way that North Korea will make a statement of revolution and show the world that foreign influences aren’t an important factor for success as a nation-state.

Each mainstream culture around the world influences the other major ones and “compete” in a way to express itself to the fullest in a distinctive manner. Popular culture in the United States influences every corner of the globe, due to the reputation held by the country itself, not its’ people. It is impossible to always be right, but it is our duty as Americans to always have the greatest good for the greatest people. We can’t be held accountable by the interpretations of our culture in the eyes of another country, nor can we judge their culture just because it is different. What needs to be understood is the purpose and function of culture in one’s life and realize that it serves the same essential role everywhere in the world.
