Emersons Essays Having read the essays written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, we can agree with opinions of many other writers that Self Reliance is more appealed to American college students today than his The American Scholar. Lets have a look through all arguments and try to improve it. Ralph Waldo Emerson is one of the greatest translators of reality. A lot of philosophers gave their interpretation to the circumstances surrounded us. They examined the sources and consequences. So, did Emerson. His works, like works of a great man, included a lot of ideas and thought.
He proved the interrelationship between things and processes in our life. But I would like to concentrate my attention on one very important thought for me. It is self reliance. I am strongly sure that nowadays it is the very thing to think about, especially if you are a college student. Why? Because today college students live in a more complex world than their parents did. Though Emerson considered: Society never advances.
It recedes as fast on one side as it gains on the other, (Emerson, Essay I) – I think its from philosophical point of view. But we cannot help noticing that ways of life and thinking have been changing constantly. In his work The American Scholar Emerson gave us ideas about the education of his time. At that time three things were considered to be the most important in the process. They were nature, books and actions. But nowadays, though universal things are of great importance, but a complex process of existence demands other virtues. In the contemporary world we have not only a technical revolution and a revolution in sources of energy; but first of all we should point on the great changes in our consciousness.

A lot of students suffer a crisis in confidence about their future; some of them have faced pressure from the birth; or have sunken under the weight of obligation; they are moving from dependence to independence. And, finally, the college years are a challenging time of life. It is a huge stress. Thats why college students are crossed and follow the paths other (more experienced) students do.
Society everywhere is in concpiracy against the manhood of every one of its members..Self reliance is its aversion. Some of people may say that a young person should follow all the falls patterns. They are our experiencing freedom. And it is the first and main step in being self reliance. May be, they are right. But and may be Emerson, saying I am ashamed to think how easily we capitulate to badges and names, to large society and dead institutions (Emerson, Essay I), is not so confident for someone.
But I am sure that all his work was not an accusatory speech but an instruction: how to behave you in difficult life situations. I liked his word very much: Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you a peace but the triumph of principles. (Emerson, Essay I) And its really true. Your believe in God; in His mercy; your understanding of good and bad; and the attitude of others towards you everything depends only on you and your self reliance. I think that the work is of great value in contemporary world. But only if you dont take it as an instruction for a selfish man.
