Claire Kahane sums up Flannery O?Connor?s writings by saying that her characters ?reflect a hostile nature, and even the Christ? is an ultimately threatening figure??(320).
She defines the devil as ?an evil intelligence determined on its own supremacy?(320).
In her writings she also has the characters seem as though they were smug with their own supremacy. The characters efforts in the story show their confidence in their on human nature. The characters in her stories over and over show their values in life through their actions in the story. The characters are usually brought back to reality by some force that acts upon them. Violence is usually portrayed in these scenes as in O?Connor?s story, ?Revelation,? when the ?ugly girl? throws the book at Mrs. Turpin and begins to choke her. This act was trying to bring Mrs. Turpin back to reality, to show her how she was looking at the world, and her way of looking at things is wrong. Suzanne Paulson writes on O?Conner?s story, ?The Life You Save May Be Your Own.? She brings attention to a character called Mrs. Crater. She is a toothless mother, and is known to be ?aggressive, wooden, phallic, and unfeeling.?(323).
In this story she lives with her handicapped daughter who is being approached to be married by a ?vagabond.? As the Vagabond talks with Mrs. Crater, Mrs. Crater shows her intelligence by answering the gentleman?s questions with a repetitive ?That?s right.? ?That?s right? show Mrs. Crater?s intelligence and her limited human response. The vagabond gets wind of the con to have him marry Mrs. Crater?s daughter, and rides off to the next town with the family and priest seeking justice on him.
