Who am I? Where do I come from? Why am I even here? These are the kind of questions that each and every one of us ask at a certain point of our live. Do I remember the first time I heard the words “God”, or “Bible”? I guess I was too young to recall. One thing I can certify however is that these two words epitomize the rocks I have used to build my worldview. The book of Genesis contains the very first ideologies that establish the fundamental levels of this framework through which I view and understand the world. Where do I come from? Moses in the book of Genesis gave the perfect answer to this question. The Supreme Being whose origin is still unknown to us created the world and everything in it during the first five days of creation. He created man, Adam and Eve on the sixth day, and was very blissful because he saw that everything he did was good.
He put them both in the Garden of Eden, but forbade them to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However, Eve who was tricked by the serpent, ate from the tree and fed her husband; they sinned. This original offence they committed caused all their descendants to fall to a state very different from the original state in which they bear the consequences of that fault. Genesis 2:25 tells us “and they were both naked and unashamed”, they were established in holiness and justice in which they knew no evil or death. This fallen state has caused all mankind to be born in sin and has condemned it to death. Sin has corrupted mankind, has brought a big obstruction between God and us, and has brought evil into his amazing creation. Even though God showed Adam and Eve his merciful love by preparing a redemption plan which Jesus is part of, man did not care; he continued to sin.

The world was so embedded in sin that God had to send a deluge to clean up the earth. Only Noah and his family survived bringing a new beginning to the earth. Who am I? Moses gave us a clear picture of our identity in the book of Genesis as well. Genesis 1:26, tell us “God said let us make man in our own image according to our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every creepy thing that creeps on earth”. Therefore in his own image he made man, and breathed the breath of life in him. He put him to sleep and from his rib he made woman. He thought that the work of his hands was “very good” for all creature reveals his trace, but only man is his image. He gave man the authority to rule over every tree that yields seeds, and every animal on earth, in the sky, and in the sea because he knew man was different from them.
As a union of body, soul, and spirit and all these other capacities that he gave us, we are the visible bodily representatives of the invisible God on earth. We were uniquely, fearfully, and wonderfully created because we were made in his image. Our likeness to God however does not in any circumstances make us similar to him for we are a contradiction of both beauty and sin. Why am I here? The book of Genesis tells us that God’s decree when he created the world was for us to establish human culture and civilization and for us to take care of his creation. He made this clear in the Bible when he entrusted Adam and Noah with producing seeds and taking care of the earth. Family therefore meant a lot to God which is why he created Adam and Eve, man and woman.
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” Genesis 2:28; this was God’s original intention about marriage. However, man with his wicked heart brought changes god’s plan making same sex marriage acceptable. The original sin has also brought a lot of enmity between men and women. It was part of Eve’s punishment that her wishes and wants will be that of her husband, and that he will rule over her. This being said the book of Genesis clearly specifies that gender equality is not right and does not really exist. Women are to be subordinate to their husbands and obey them as it is a curse that has been carried from the ancient days.

Now, because Adam and Eve, as well as Noah obeyed God’s commandment of multiplying, the earth started to fill up, and the generations kept on increasing. Man’s wickedness was not getting any better. Since they spoke all together one language, they tried to compare their filthy triumphs to God’s glory. They thought they could reach God, and avoid being dispersed by building a city named Babel whose top is in the heavens, but they were violating God’s original command to multiply and fill the earth. As a punishment, God confused their languages, and had them scattered around all the earth. From this was born civilization and the different types of ethnic groups that have existed from the time of the Bible until today. Even though we were one, man’s wickedness caused us to be divided in groups of people that are different from one another.
The book of Genesis therefore represents the pillar of my worldview because it contains fundamental answers to the questions every living creature asks. God made a beautiful world in which he placed man who he created according to his likeness, and made him the guardian. Man, because he fell brought sin into the world followed by so many consequences. Issues such as gender inequality, same sex marriage, or division between communities would not have happened if the original state was kept. Since his heart is filled with so much Grace, God has prepared a redemption plan for his creation which has been unfolding throughout history since the birth of Jesus, his precious lamb.
