Ageing and Health
Mr. President Sir,
I take it as a special privilege that I have been given an opportunity to express my candid views on the topic, “Ageing and Health.
Well, before discussing the different dimensions of this contemporary issue, I will like to define the term ageing.
What is ageing? In spite of the anti ageing industry, ageing may be defined as a natural, non pathological process which affects all living things. It is an irreversible process which cannot be stopped and will go on with its natural pace.
Advance in medical science and technology, early and accurate diagnosis of diseases and better cure have increased the life expectancy in developed countries considerably. Like life expectancy in Japan is 83, in Germany 80 and in U.S.A 78 years and the under developed countries have miserably low life expectancy like in Sierra Leone 41, in Angola 38 and in Swazi Land only 32 years while Pakistan stands in the middle. Our life expectancy is 65 years.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Now I come to the second part of my topic, “health”.
Generally speaking, Health is that state of your mind and body when every organ is functioning in a natural, smooth and balanced way.
When I combine the two words, Ageing and Health in the previous perspective, an instant question arises. What are the factors which determine the quality of health with ageing? It is not a simple phenomenon. Many factors contribute to it like Genetics, Behavior, social attitude, Health care, peaceful family life and Environment.
The Essay on Low life expectancy
Today’s world is all about speed. Every single process is studied and programmed to be as quick as possible, with optimal efficiency. We are currently witnessing a fundamental transformation of the society that we can qualify as a robotisation, essentially in the developped countries. That could be beneficial for some countries, in some fields, for some people. But we all should be aware that ...
While talking about ageing and health, I will not restrict myself to the idea of living long only; I will discuss ways and means of not living just longer but living healthy and better too.
To achieve this end, we will have to make preparations since our prime age and we will have to continue this healthy life style throughout our life.
Mr. President Sir, now I will enumerate the ways and means which are essential for healthy ageing.
First learn to live very close to the requirements of Mother Nature. Eat simple and balanced diet. Eat less than your appetite. Take at least 7 to 8 hours sleep. As the age old saying goes, “early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”
Secondly Control your weight. You will be amazed to know that about 300,000 Americans die every year only due to obesity or obesity related diseases. To control your weight, take appropriate exercise daily as during exercise hormone called endorphins is produced which gives you sense of pleasure and happiness and keeps you away from stress and depression.
Thirdly, learn the art of stress management. Engage in activities those are meaningful to you. Be busy; do not consider yourself redundant element of society. Never forget that senior citizens are the reservoir of wisdom, experience, enlightenment and leadership.
Fourthly cultivate positive thinking and emotions to live longer and better life…Remember – hostility and hatred means cardiovascular abnormalities…learn to forgive…Adopt the philosophy of love for all, hate for none. It will give you great help in maintaining your health standard high in all ages especially in the old age.
Ladies and gentlemen,
it is my firm belief that it is our attitude towards life which ensures healthy ageing. It is not profit or power or prestige or property which gives you perfect health, it is the unending passion of Abdus Sattar Edhi, it is the unmatched transparency of Ashfaq ahmad, it is the unprecedented fearlessness of Habib Jalib, it is the unlimited vision of Dr. Saleemuz Zaman Siddiqui while on the international horizon, it is the ceaseless Endeavour of great political leader Nelson Mendela against apartheid and racial discrimination which gave all of these legends the dynamic health even in their old age and I have no hesitation to say that their energetic and full of passion old age is now a source of inspiration for our young generation.
