In every culture, the beliefs of the people greatly affect every aspect of their lives. During the early Islamic period, their strict beliefs and teachings affected the lifestyle of the Muslims. Three of which are; Islamic art, the status of Muslim women, and the language. Muslims lived simple and pure lives, this surely did reflect upon those factors. In the present many ideas have have, but the core of their beliefs have remained the same.
The Islams were simple and straight forward with their religon, but their artwork wasn’t really so simple. They used simple elements and made beaurtiful works of art. From basic ceramics like glass to textiles like silk, all were apart of Islamic art. Muslims made glass bottles, cosmetic containers, clothing, furnishings, and many other pieces of art. The development of the Koran had an great impact on the development of Arabic writing. Arabic script represents the expression of the will and strength of Allah, and as is known as sacred by the faithful. One of Islam’s most known calligraphers was Ibn Muqlah, he invented one of the most prominent cursive scripts. Certain scripts were favored for specific uses, in the Koran, Kufic was used. The Kufic script was often written in gold on parchment and was enhanced with floral interlaces. Calligraphy was not just used for two-dimensional works but also in ceramics, textiles, and metalwork. In the Islamic society, women lived very strict lives. The Koran instructed men to treat women with respect. Just as everyone was known to be equal, the women however were falling short. Males were the dominating force in Islam, and still is. The early Muslim women were restricted to their house. It was said that a woman should only leave the house three times in her life; when entering her new husband’s home, her parents death, and her own death. Polygony and divorce was permitted, but in the male’s favor. The Tradition of Hariem prohibits females making any contact with a male outside of the family. A custom that many follow today if that women are covered from head to toe and they wear lots of jewelry. The main right that seems to have existed was that women were able to inherit and own property. Early Muslim women followed these rights and customs all the time, as they were very important parts of their lives.
The Muslims are known to speak many different languages. The language they speak largely depends on the area they reside from. For example; Iranians speak Persian and Afghanistan has three major languages, Pashto, Dari and Uzbek, each belonging to ethnic groups. Muslims believe that God revealed the Koran to Muhammad literally, word-for-word, in the Arabic language. This is then why Arabic is known as the holy language of Islam. Ninety percent of the present world’s Muslims do not speak Arabic as their native language. Yet in daily prayers, and even in simple conversations with each other, Arabic is heard and spoken. Arabic is written from right to left and consists of a very simple alphabet. Throughout the years, Arabic has spread to many other areas, these areas have their own dialects but are still very similar to Arabic.
Islam’s strict beliefs shape the lifestyle of every Muslim. They’re artisic and proportioned in art, protective and loyal with Muslim women, and open-minded with the language of the Muslims. Times have changed, and Muslims have become more liberal with their beliefs. However, the Koran, the Five Pillars, and the teachings of Muhammad have remained the core of Islam.
