Elias also offers explanations as to how the victims' movement doesn't help victims, what the real causes of crime ...
According to DuPont, 2009, each country in the world experiences human trafficking. The victims can be tricked through false promises of better employment opportunities, shelter, food and better lives. However, as it turns out for the unaware victims later, they never get the promises. The traffickers only satisfy their aim of exploiting the trafficked persons, by forcing them to become sex workers working in brothels or made sex slaves for particular people. A victim is obliged to work where the abductors demand without any compensation. Human trafficking is shameful and a global crisis. It touches lives of people and families by depriving basic human dignity and freedom as well as denial of human rights. In the journal Human Trafficking Is More Than Sex Trafficking and Prostitution: Implications for Social Work, the trafficking for exploitative labor, though not prevalent as sexual exploitation, exists globally. It exists in forms of working in farms, undertaking household chores forcefully, providing labor in harsh environments of working such as mines and recruitment to gangs for the gains of the trafficker. The concept of human trafficking is based on slavery.
It involves a trafficker controlling another person and exploiting them. It is a form of business just like slavery and generates billions of dollars annually. It is totally illegal globally and is defined as a crime and is punishable by law, just like slavery. In the U.S, cases of human trafficking can be derived from observations such as existence of enslaved farm workers in Florida and California. It essentially takes place in the immediate society. In areas such as Atlanta, Los Angeles, Wichita and Toledo, there are young girls who have been forced into prostitution. Enslaving of women in New York and Maryland as domestic workers is also present today, (Haerens, 2012).
These are innocent people but forced to compromising situations through this fatal crime. As a form of crime, human trafficking does not discriminate the victims. It overlooks gender, age, race, or religion. The traffickers purpose it to acquire a source of exploitation at zero cost therefore anyone can be a victim. However, factors such as lack of education, poverty and existence of marginalized groups makes one prone to being a victim of this crime.
