CRITIQUE ON DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. I HAVE A DREAM SPEECH
Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his speech on August 28, 1963 at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. It was a part of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom Act. This march was a vital factor in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Mr. King stood beneath the Lincoln Monument, fueled by a sea of his peers who supported his beliefs. Emphasizing his very famous phrase “I HAVE A DREAM” and he implored “LET FREEDOM RING.” It was about mid-afternoon when his speech took place. More than a quarter of a million people, black and white, gathered in the harsh summer heat to hear this speech. They sang freedom songs like-“WE SHALL OVER COME” by Joan Baez and “OH, FREEDOM” by Odetta.
Martin Luther King Jr. wore a very nice black fitted suit to this event; he wore a white dress shirt and black tie. Besides the clothing Mr. King wore a very confident but serious look on his face. This was very appropriate for this occasion because I think it gave him a sense of credibility and power and commanded attention.
Mr. King used several different kinds of non-verbal communication techniques. First of all I would like to point out the way he established connection with his audience, he formed a sense of unity or bond by sharing their beliefs, despair, and frustration. Another form of non verbal I noticed was the way he maintain visual or eye contact with his audience at all times, keeping them engaged pulling them in. His tone of voice kept them interested and it stated the importance and the passion of what he was saying. The way he carried himself radiated confidence. He was very informed and aware of his topic. His hand gestures at the end of the speech I believe to be the most powerful (I got goose bumps at this point) he raises his hands bringing a sense of hope and unity to all.
