Thesis : Sleep Deprivation also known as insomnia among all ages can have a major impact on the actions and lives of people of all ages.

a) Insomnia is the inability to sleep or to stay asleep.
-Insomnia can be cause by almost anything.
b)Most drugs such as nicotine and alcohol, Medications such as antidepressants, heart and blood pressure medications, allergy medicines, decongestants, weight-loss medicines can lead to sleep loss. Other factors: sleeping next to a snoring partner, parasites, genetic conditions, overactive mind, pregnancy. For women: estrogen and other hormone shifts during menstruation
c) More than one-quarter of people in the U.S. report occasionally not getting enough sleep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the National Center for Sleep Disorders Research at the National Institutes of Health, about 30-40% of adults say they have some symptoms of insomnia within a given year, and about 10-15 percent of adults say they have chronic insomnia.

b) Recent medical studies show that insomnia can increase hunger and affect your body’s metabolism in a way that makes weight loss more difficult. Not only do we accomplish less with less sleep, we also don’t burn as many calories. The body’s reaction is to hoard calories as fat, making our weight loss goals more difficult than they need to be.
c) The Institute of Medicine estimates that billions of dollars are spent on medical costs that are directly related to sleep disorders.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that 100,000 vehicle accidents occur due to drowsy driving. An estimated 1,500 die each year in these accidents. Employers spend approximately $3,000 more in health care costs on employees with sleep problems. According to the US Surgeon General, insomnia costs the Government more than $15 billion per year in health care costs.

a) there are several medical treatments for insomnia: Temazepam, Zolpidem, Zaleplon, Ramelteon, Triazolam, Eszopiclone ( all prescriptions you must get from your doctor).
b) The other methods to deal with insomnia are to make life adjustments such as avoiding stressful situations or making your sleeping environment more comfortable. Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques can help.
I can speak from experience because i have insomnia and use these techniques to help myself fall asleep.
