King Philip’s War King Philip’s War was one of the most costly wars of all time. It began in June of 1675 and ended a mere sixteen months later. Although it was not an incredibly long war, it was one with incredible consequences. The causes were partly in the Native Americans diminishing share of New England land, partly in the fact that they realized their so called “inferiority to the white man”, and partly in the mind of one chief who believed the mingling of Native Americans and white men to be unsuited. This man is now known as King Philip.
King Philip’s war was a turning point in American history. It resulted in great losses to the Native Americans, turned New England into a catastrophe, and put an appalling stereotype on the Native Americans. King Philip’s War was one of the bloodiest and most costly in the history of America. More than half of the Native Americans died. Others were sold into slavery, or suffered with starvation. The Algonquian culture practically disappeared.
This included the Wampanogas, Nip mucks, and Narragansett. The loss of these Native American tribes caused New England to be seized by the English. By losing these tribes, the war deprived American culture of something that can never be re-gained. After King Philip’s War, disaster struck New England.
The colonists became dominant, but at a large price. The population decrease was so great that even twenty years after the war, the towns that had been burned by Philip still held no occupants. Since there was a great loss of citizens, there was also a great loss of laborers. This caused issues with the economic achievement of New England. For this reason, the incomes of individual citizens did not exceed their prewar accomplishments for over 140 years. Economic problems were not the only ones that occurred in New England, there were also great political losses.

Since the economy seriously damaged New England, the independent nation now was in need of support. And so New England turned to its closest country, England. This new alliance caused very serious strains, and contributed to the American Revolution. The worst consequence of the war was the way that it depicted Native Americans. During this era, the Puritans designed a grotesque image of the Native American. The Native Americans were then perceived as murderous and aggressive.
This stereotype prevented a necessary society from forming. These untrue rumors kept European Americans and Native Americans from merging into any type of union. It was not until the 1800 s that anyone ever bothered to consider that the Native Americans might have been justified in their actions. All of these events show the repercussions of King Phillips War. It can be inferred at this point that King Phillip’s War earned its title as one of the most drastic wars in history.
