What are the causes of change? The causes of change are both internal and external. Internal causes of change are those that occur within a person. The person initiates the change and is in control. External causes of change involves a persons surroundings changing. There is little control over this type of change. The novel looking for Alibrandi by Melena Marchetta is about Josephine Alibrandi, a Catholic girl, in her final year of High school. As the year progresses Josie alters her perspective on many issues including her culture, family, own identity , and the importance of social standing and wealth. The causes of these changes are internal, external and a combination of the two. Josie’s perspective of her grandmother changes from viewing her as nagging old women to having a loving, caring, respectful relationship with her .The episodic narrative which is written in first person enables the reader to see the stages in which her perspective changes as she gains knowledge about her grandmother and also how it is her own actions that allow the change occur. Initially Josie dreads having to spend time with her grandmother, as she states my main objective in life at the moment is to get on my grandmothers nerves. But as the novel progresses Josie learns more about her Nonnas life and abut her affair with Marcus Sanford she finds out that her grandmother Hadnt lived life the way she thought, she hadn’t played by all the rules By the end of the novel Josie is able to recognise her Nona’s full worth and she cries as she realises I’m loved by the two strongest women I’d ever meet in a life time. The film what women want shows how Nick Marshall, a middle aged advertising agent changes from being a chauvinistic self centred person to one who is acutely aware of the emotions of others, particularly women. The external reasons for this change was a bizarre accident where nick is electrocuted in the bathtub, which enables nick to hear women’s thoughts. The importance of this scene is highlighted by the use of slow motion as the hairdryer falls into the water and the use abrupt camera angle and the non-digetic music which makes the scene appear more comical. Nick is humanised by listening to womens thought and opinion’s of him. This alters his way of thinking and makes him willing to communicate with women differently.
This willingness to change can be seen in the mis-en-scene, where he is filmed surrounded by women laughing and enjoying there company. Cat Stevens explores the differing viewpoints on change through his song father and son. The song has two character within it, a father and his son. The character of the father presents the view on change that you shouldn’t force change instead, let it occur around you. Which can be seen in the lyrics just relax…settle down .The view point is supported by the music when he is singing. In these verses The music is simple, slower , as the basic chords are repeated on an acoustic guitar .The character of the son has a completely different viewpoint. He believes that he needs to be out there experiencing life, where the action is, making changes.
Through the lyrics it is seen that the son can no longer ignore his burning desire to experience life, its hard but its harder to ignore it The sons view on change is reflected in the music. In these versus when he sings the pitch of his voice is higher, louder and more dramatic. The music contains melodies plus the basic chords. The contrasting of the characters highlights the opposing views. However the Text The Door by Miroslav Holub suggest that the change comes from within in only.. Which is unlike Marchetta’s view on change that it occurs because of external and internal causes.
