The two paintings are similar and different; both are representational, stylized differently. “Making the Grade”, is representational and nonrepresentational, we see realism in the style, the color and lighting form, yet this is coupled with non-realistic letters (grade) on a road. Knowing the name you come to thoughts of what the painting is trying to convey, one thought is that the long road of success includes or depends on the grades achieved, we notice the letter on the front most center is “A.” The iconography of letter “A” in the world has always been a leader, from grades in school to a leading letter in the alphabet. The form is realistic in color and shape and style is naturalistic, seem definite that there is a story or general meaning been conveyed, though it seems narrative on the social views of reaching certain grades, “A” been the best, it could also be expressive as to his feelings of grades. “Scrambled” is hard to form a meaning of, a representational painting in a significant stylized manner; the colors are very warm and earthly. The style is bold and graphic, almost cartoonist, from this and not knowing history on the artist or time, I think it is expressive.
Both artists use of color is different, “Making the Grade”, is realistic in its color and form, “Scrambled” is the opposite, the artist turns inwards in his expression. Composition of “Making the Grade”, leads you through the road of letters in midst of two buildings, “Scrambled”, leads to center of the painting between the two vehicles. The composition, style and form is effective in the feelings it conveys, “Scrambled”, makes you feel very in awe of the meaning that is been expressed while “Making the Grade” leaves you in search of the events that made the artist paint this.
