Section 2: Now that you understand how to read pH measurements, go out into the field to gather pH samples from 3 different lakes to take back to the lab for testing, and answer the following question:
What was the pH level measured at Lake 1? Five
What was the pH level measured at Lake 2? Three
What was the pH level measured at Lake 3? Five
Which two lakes have the highest levels of acidity in their water? One and three
Based off of the information gathered at each lake, explain why your results may have turned out this way. Because Lake one runs into Lake three and all the waste went done stream and that is why it is reading the same level.

What is pH? Measure of activity of the Hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions.
What is a base? Substance that reacts with an acid to form a salt and turns red litmus paper blue.
What is an acid? A compound that tastes sour and forms a water solution which turns blue litmus paper red.
What does it mean if a solution has more hydrogen ions (H+)? means it is below seven on the ph scale.Also it is acidic.
What does it mean if a solution has more hydroxide ions (OH-)? Basic or alkaline. Which means it has a ph more then seven on the ph scale.
What does it mean if a solution is neutral? It means it is not acidic or basic. Which makes it equal.
Explain the pH scale and how it is used to indicate acidic, alkaline, and neutral solutions. The ph scale is used to measure acid, alkaline and neutral solutions. Numbers moving at seven point zero and going to zero means it is an acidity. When the numbers move from seven and up it means it is an alkaline.So the scale divides acids from bases.
What does it mean in terms of strength when the pH of an acid changes from 5 to 4? It means that the acid level reduced from five to four. Also that it has a lower acidic level.
