Opinion Essay
Should the same law which prohibits the sale and consumption of marijuana be applied to tobacco?
Tobacco is an agricultural product processed from the leaves of plants in the genus Nicotania. It is most commonly used as a drug, and is valuable cash crop for countries such as Cuba, India, China, and the United-States. A question well asked is should the same law which prohibits the sale and consumption of marijuana be applied to tobacco? Personally, I think yes for many reasons. For example; tobacco is ranked the 3rd most addictive drug and 14th most harmful out of the 20 commonly-used drugs. Also tobacco has caused over 100 million deaths in the 20th century and finally tobacco can also endanger non-smokers around second hand smoke.
To start off, tobacco is the 3rd most addictive drug because of the main ingredient; nicotine. The word nicotiana (nicotine) is in honor of Jean Nicot, French ambassador to Portugal, who in 1559 sent it as a medicine to the court of Catherine de Medici. Approximately 70% of smokers want to quit. About 40% try to quit every year. Of those who try to quit, about 7% stay off nicotine for more than a year. The vast majority do not make it even a week without cigarettes. For this reason, I think that tobacco should be prohibited.
Secondly, tobacco has caused over 100 million deaths in the 20th century. The usage of tobacco is an activity that is practiced by some 1.1 billion people and up to 1/3 of the adult population. Although The World Health Organization (WHO) reports it to be the leading preventable cause of death worldwide and estimates that it currently causes 5.4 million deaths per year. Furthermore, tobacco should be eliminated worldwide.

In fact, tobacco can also endanger those whom are non-smokers surrounded by secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke is better known as passive smoking. It occurs when a non-smoker is consistently inhaling cigarette smoke from a smoker. Smokers didn’t believe the testing results found by the scientific community were true. Overall the sale of tobacco should be no more. In many researches it has been found that second hand inhaling of cigarette smoke has caused more health problems with the upper respiratory illnesses.
I know some of you might be thinking, “whoa, this is a little much”, and to some people yes it would be way out of line although; without tobacco and cigarettes the world could be that much cleaner in the air. There would no longer be added cigarette butts everywhere on the ground and for those who are addicted well they would have to find a new hobby and something to take them off their addiction.
In conclusion, if you were to calculate how much money you would save in your wallet, and how much money the government would save in health care, that would be a good financial incentive. However if you look at in on the health side, tobacco kills 5.4 million people a year and is also endangering non-smokers with second hand-smoke. In my opinion this is enough to prohibit tobacco product without a doubt.
