Peace and Conflict Resolution (Education) One of many great aspects of political correctness is emphasizing that men and women are basically genderless. In theory, any man or women can be charged with sexual harassment if him or her simply looks at representative of opposite sex. That, of course, cannot result in normal relations between men and women, especially when one of them is teacher and other is student. In her article Professor of Desire, Deborah Rhode tells the story of professor John Dwyer, from University of California, who was being accused of sexual harassment by one of his students. Although, there wasnt any evidence to back students claim, professor still had to resign. Author is clearly siding herself with the student, even though that there is a chance that she was lying, in order to get certain benefits. Rhode leaves no doubt that the sexual harassment in universities constitutes a great problem and she suggests that this should result in severe punishments, on the part of perpetrators of these horrible acts.
At the same time, she admits that: Once a case becomes public, victims as well as perpetrators are on trial, and concrete evidence is often lacking. Even women who “win” in formal proceedings may lose outside them. (Rhode) Author doesnt mention the reason why women lose outside of formal proceedings. This is because their integrity appears to be very questionable. The beauty of sexual harassment charge is that it doesnt have to be substantiated with factual evidence. The accuser already wins by the fact of destroying the reputation of its adversary. Women always want to maintain some sexual tension in their relations with men.
The Essay on Women And Men Communicate Differently
Women and Men Communicate Differently The process of neo-Liberal dogmas, such as celebration of diversity and elimination of sexism, being showed up peoples throats, brought about a situation, when employment policies correspond less and less to the objective reality of interaction between genders at workplace. Men and women are expected to execute their professional duties with the same ...
The biggest insult for them is not being harassed but being unnoticed. In order to eliminate the grounds for sexual harassment in universities and colleges, these institutions would have to return to the idea of providing separate educational facilities for both genders. This, of course, is unacceptable, since this idea is probably even more politically incorrect than a sexual harassment itself. In my opinion, there is no doubt that such problem exists, but its being blown out of proportion in recent times. This results in many teachers acquiring a psychological phobia of being groundlessly accused. It goes without saying, that this prevents them from concentrating on educational process.
The idea of education stands for gaining actual knowledge. But now, we see that students are encouraged to spend more time on thinking whether their civil rights are being breached, instead of performing their primary duty – studying. As practice shows, only 5% of students that file for sexual harassment, are able to provide any kind of proof that it really did take place. At the same time, the half of complainers claim that such harassment was continuous, which makes one wonder about why werent the victims able to even record their teachers sexual advances on tape, especially that these were regular? I agree with Rhode though, when she says: Institutions should have clear policies with options for training and informal confidential resolution of complaints. When it comes to sex in schools, we should not have to ask who is minding the adults. (Rhode).
Confidential resolution of issues that have to do with sexual harassment in universities and colleges is crucial, in order to avoid educational conflicts. One of the reasons why sexual harassment in places of learning gained the status of grave problem is because news coverage allows making a public spectacle out of it, which attracts the attention of marginal elements. In my opinion, the biggest danger about this is that it creates an unhealthy learning environment, when students and teacher look at each other with suspicion. About all other aspects, related to this issue, we can only think from the attributive point of view. It appears that this problem has the potential of resolving itself naturally, as long as peoples pathologic curiosity towards this issue is not being artificially maintained.
