Many people, children and adults look up to athletes as role models. They are viewed upon as supernatural beings with many talents and skills. The way athletes portray themselves is very important especially to younger children who emulate them. Children like to imitate what they see, which is why it is so important for athletes to try and set a good example.
In the articles that are presented in this scrapbook, specifically articles about the personal lives of many athletes, these athletes have succeeded in presenting themselves as either a good role model or a rather appalling role model. Three articles portray some athletes as crime-committing people. Some manage to escape the punishments due to the power of money, while other are unable to.
These stories leave a great impact on the minds and hearts of all the sports fans. It would not be a surprise if some fans are appalled by these situations. In the case of Al Martin, people were surprised at his arrest on assault charges. He was considered a great guy and has been a model citizen who apparently represents himself well. His personal life is exposed to the whole media. This exposure can dramatically alter his reputation as a baseball player. It is possible that some fans will turn away and others may try to emulate his actions. His actions may bring shame to himself as well as to his family and team. On the other hand, the exposure of this event also brings shame to the media for not leaving his personal life personal.

Another shocking personal story is of the story that was rendered on the earlier week of March. Apparently, Ed Belfour offered money to police to stay out of jail. His action leaves the impression that he is willing to beg the authorities in order to escape the punishment he deserves. This may lead people to think negative thoughts about him and possibly associate the word shame with his name. When one commits a crime that deserves punishment, one shall receive the punishment regardless of what he or she does for a living.
However, there are certain athletes who display positive actions many children can be proud to emulate. Desmond Mason is a great example. Along with his basketball career, Desmond also has a minor career in Arts. He is an artist who uses art as an escape. It is obvious that Desmond sets a good example that many can follow. His passion for art is quite intriguing. In this case, the exposure of his story is a benefit to those who can relate to his story. Also, his story can inspire those who want to pursue a similar passion.
There are many children, abused by family members who feel they have nowhere to turn to. However, Ronald Jean s story can inspire them and teach them that at the end of the tunnel there is light. Children can relate to his story and begin to feel better knowing that even a famous athlete underwent a similar situation.
I can imagine the pressure athletes endure everyday. Not only do they have to perform well in their game, but they also have to worry about leading a good example to those who look up to them. Some athletes are on the right track, while others get lost in the track once in a while.
