Marriage between the same sex is not widely accepted even in the United States. As of the year 2007, there are only two states that had allowed same-sex marriage. These are Massachusetts and Iowa (www. kcci. com, 2007).
On the other hand, there are states that allow Civil Union between the same sex. These are the states New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia. There have been several views on same sex marriage in the United States. In the year 2004, CBS News had surveyed several Americans regarding the issue. From the results of the survey, adding both the people approved of legal marriage and civil unions, 55% of the population are approved of same sex relationships.

However, civil unions is not the same as a marriage. Having a civil union gives some rights that the marriage also has like child adoption. Although there are still people who opposes the idea of same-sex partnership but in the future, the number of states that allow gay marriage might increase as time goes by. Both sides have its own reasons why gay marriage should not be allowed or should not be disallowed. Marriage between two persons means that both persons love each other and wants to be together. However, there are those people that chooses to marry because they need to like political marriages and because of the child that they have conceived. If the participants in a marriage do not love each other and they plan to marry because of convenience that is another story and this should not be allowed. The reason of marriage as a procreation means is another reason for the opposition. However, there are people who do not have the capacity to bear a child and still get married. An example of which are the old couples who marry. If a particular person reached their 50s, especially the woman, it is impossible to have a child and yet they still got married. In effect, it just gives the homosexuals the right to love and be happy.
Allowing the same sex marriage is not only beneficial to the gay people but it only shows that the justice system and society had begun to accept gays or lesbians in society. By not allowing the marriage only shows that there is still discrimination between the gays, and lesbians. America is a democratic country and it is only right to for the country to accept same sex marriage.
