So Much to Tell You Essay
The themes explored in “So Much to Tell You” By John Marsden are relationships; family issues; attitude; Self Image/ Identity. In this Novel you are reading the diary entries of a teenager by the name of Marina, she has been sent to boarding school because her mother hopes it will get her talking again.
The point of view of this book is first person and is written as an internal monologue and displayed in a diary format. The only problem with the novel being first person is that you only get one side of the story. So you don’t know how they others react to Marina even though she tells you that “I make the nice ones angry” but we don’t know how true this is we just have to trust that Marina is truthful.
The relationship the main character (Marina) has with most of the people she knows is cold in the way she treats everyone in her dorm, like when hey try to talk to her she ignores them and runs away. Marina doesn’t know why she does the she just does. There are only a couple of people Marina communicates with and they are a girl she sits next to in prep Cathy. She would be the closest thing Marina would have to a Friend. Cathy Has invited Marina to her house several time. Because Marina doesn’t talk it make it hard to talk to Cathy even though she really likes. The only way they communicate is through notes they write to one another during prep “I’m sorry about yelling at you. I was in a foul after science ‘cos Hardcastle virtually accuse me of cheating. It wasn’t anything you did. I’m sorry – I think you’re nice and I want to be friends. Cathy” (p 25) after that Marina had no idea of what to do because so wasn’t use to the attention even it was so small. The other Positive relationship she has is with her English teacher Mr. Lindell and his family. Marina makes the reader feel as if Mr. Lindell family is her family and that she fits into it. Mr. Lindell is the only person Marina trusts so when she was in Hospital so wrote to him hoping that he could get her out. The strangest relationship that Marina has is with her family.

Marina and her mother Relationship isn’t a normal loving caring mother to daughter relation but is quite different. Marina make the reader fell like her mum by whom she feels betrayed and has abandon her by when she got drop of at the boarding school “…Sent here because my mother can’t stand my silent presence at home. Sent here because of my face.” And then goes off with her new husband (which Marina thinks is a creep) to New York. Then when Marina goes home her mother puts her back in hospital. So the reader does begin to feel like her mother has abandoned her and get stand to see her. When Marina’s mum tries to talk to her and Marina doesn’t talk back so her mum get angry at her and yells which make Marina get upset and not wanting to talk. That makes their relationship difficult and is driving them apart.
Marina relationships she has with eh rest of her family isn’t has intense as it is with her mum but still different from most families. Marina wants to know her father because in the time they were together she never gets to really know him. She also doesn’t blame him for what he did to her by getting acid on her face instead she feels sorry for him because he tried to support a family “I don’t know what’s best really. I mean, he worked so hard to make money so we could have things…… But look at where we’ve ended after all his hard work”. So the reader knows why she wants to get to know him. Marina and her grandmother don’t really communicate, only communicating when it is really needed to stay in touch. When Marina staid at her grandma house, Marina just watches TV and did what her grandma ask her don’t do, not really doing much else. Her grandma took her to see a movie on March 4 Marina didn’t mind it but felt that her grandma is being nice to her and that she feel very awkward when she is around her.

The attitude that Marina has is a typically teenager. But Marina does show some signs of depression. You can tell that by when she write very little like when she was in Sick Bay when she writes very little “April 5 Not good, not good, things are not good” (p 47) and when she feels better she writes about 2 pages like on May 30. The attitude that marina has in the novel is that she doesn’t want to be there but she doesn’t want to be home either she just want to go into a small dark corner and hide or just fade away, but then toward the end of the book she feel more accepted by the girls in the school and doesn’t so much want to hide any more.
A lot of the problems Marina have to do with how she looks and how she doesn’t like any one to look at her face. So she just stays in the shadows not talking to anyone. Marina use to hate it when people use to look at her but since she has come out of hospital she has grown use to people looking at her face, even when Mr. Lindell daughter ask her if it hurt “she was looking up at me – I guess she was sleepy – then after a minute she put up her hand and said “hurt face, hurt face” I know I went red in the face” even though she cried she really didn’t mind. Marina is also trying to make a “new you” but not doing anything she would have done before the accident, so she is constantly comparing herself with how she use to be.
The point of view of this book is first person and is written as an internal monologue and displayed in a diary format. The only problem with the novel being first person is that you only get one side of the story. The themes that where explored in John Marsden Novel “So Much To Tell You” were the relationships that Marina had with other around her. The family issues that she faces especially with her mum. The attitude that she portrays. But all this is just a part of growing up and everyone face it just that Marina case was different because her face is disfigured and that she doesn’t talk.
