The article entitled “Sources of stress experienced by occupational therapists and social workers in mental health settings” by Chris Lloyd, Kryss McKenna at Robert King is a study about the different sources of stress that were experienced by both the occupational therapists and the social workers. At the same time, this study identifies the factors related to stress, both demographic and work related factors.
The reason why the writer have chosen this topic is that she have worked in a variety of occupational therapy student placements already and as an occupational therapist assistant for a number of years experiencing high levels of burnout and have recognized the potential of burnout among senior occupational therapist. This article is very relevant on our study aside from the idea and the fact the we are occupational therapy students, there is a need to know whether these people were having enough time for themselves after helping and caring for other people.
The launch of this study signaled the start of giving enough attention in the state of the health workers physical and mental capacity. Thus, this study helps people in present to know and at the same time, to analyze the health care environemnt and the people in it. The Essay on Occupational Therapist
After World War I, occupational therapists have been a wonder of help to many people in a variety of ways. The need to help disable veterans stimulated this growth. Occupational therapy is the use of practice activities to treat physical or mental disabilities. First to get into the occupation you have to have a bachelor s degree, thus certificating you in this field. Four years of college ...
Instead, most of the time, the study is focused or centered on the patients, limiting it to them alone and not minding the people who take care of them. People everywhere have long been interested in a wide range of phenomena called “burnout”. Burnout has become a major issue but the word burnout is used by many different people in many different contexts and for different purposes. Masloch (1982) defines burnout as a “syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment”.
The word burnout has been continuously used and may be recognised and often associated continuously with the nursing profession. With nurses working long hours including shift work, with huge physical demands and responsibilities. Although occupational therapists do not hold the same roles and responsibilities as nurses, they do work in a variety of settings that can be just as stressful as any other profession. Also, the number of hours which they render to give their services is as tiring as those of the people who belong in the nursing profession.
Maslachs (1982) suggests that burnout tends to be the nature of the job and its associated job roles, responsibilities. This is especially crucial to consider as occupational therapists expand their roles in non traditional settings and move into other healthcare models such as the community model According to Pollock (1986) a huge difficulty for occupational therapist especially in the rehabilitation team is burnout, working with the same clients over and long periods of time can lead to feelings of disilushment and rigidly of attitudes”.
Although it is visible in the eyes of the people in the health environment and the peoeple surrounding then, study about it was not as many as those studies made for their patients. There is a very little literature that can be found with burnout specifically related to occupational therapy. With occupational therapy becoming more and more of a demand and healthcare work environments the implications of burnout should be of no exception to occupational therapists.
