For hundreds of years, sports have been used for entertainment and some would argue that entertainment is sports only use and that sports hold no other value. Some believe that sports are important because of the competition that many sports like football and basketball among various other sports require. However, sports can teach some of life’s most important lessons and values to the youth who participate in sports. Playing a sport can teach a kid sportsmanship, leadership, team building/bonding, discipline and sports can even go as far as keeping kids out of trouble.
While there are many people that undermine the importance of sports there are also people that put too much stock and emotion into sports. People should not have a bad week at work because their favorite team lost. The anger and emotion people put into following sports can often shape their world. Although sports are important for kids, they should not be the center of an adult’s life.
Sports are good for keeping kids on track as well as keeping them in shape. The time spent in practice and at games takes up free time that kids could be using to get into trouble.
Various people would argue that sports are not good for kids because sports can be too time consuming, causing academic problems. Granting that sports may be time consuming, most if not all high schools require a C average GPA which puts a lot of kids on a better academic path then they would have been on if they had not taken part in a sport . Also sports can teach kids important values and qualities in ways that a classroom doesn’t offer. For example, teachers can babble on about how important it is to be a leader and a good team player, but most kids aren’t hearing that. Then you have those very same students going to basketball practice and actually experiencing the importance of leadership and team bonding. Furthermore, sports can offer sportsmanship as well as discipline and both are very important qualities to have in life.

In spite of people believing that sports bring on bad behavior from the athlete, it could be argued that sports bring on bad behavior from the adults instead. Special treatment among athletes have conjointly been known as a downside to kids playing sports, along with coaches pressuring teachers to give better grades to their athletes. However, special treatment and grade pressure is not the behavior of the athletes themselves. This behavior comes from the adults that should know better therefore the athlete cannot be held accountable for their coach, teachers, or principles incompetent behavior which goes back to adults putting too much stock into sports.
Some people don’t realize how much playing a sport can offer to a kid. For instance, kids can learn cooperation with others, decision making skills, improvisation, and problem solving. Sports even help kids build good relationships with authority figures. These are all important things that can be applied to life and school and are applied to each of them every day.
Two norms of sports ethics are sacrifice for the game and accepting the risks and playing through pain. Most kids are still growing in high school so these norms raise the argument that sports are too dangerous.
