The Androgynous Man The Androgynous Man by Noel Perrin was published in The New York Times Magazine in 1984. Even thougth some time has passed the essay is still in the flow of time, because the theme of being androgynous is still popular. Probably, today this issue is even more widely discussed than it was before. On my oppinon, there are lots of people who feel like being androgynous. And to tell the truth modern people have got used to this phenomenon and do not really judge the people who feel like that. Democracy is also the great factor here as people believe anyone is free to do what he/she wants and to reveal the feeling concerning ownseelf and the rest of the society like these feelings are. Thus, in his essay the author wanted to say approximately the same as stated above that is: There is a large class of men and women both, to which I belong, who are essentially androgynous. That doesnt mean were gay, or low in the appropriate harmones, or uncomfortable performing the jobs traditionally assigned our sexes.
The purpose of the essay is one more time to remind that the socially determined factors (which is the level of being androgynous) will not change the inner world of the person and his/her behavior. The major effect Perrin wants to provide for the people is to make them believe everyone has some certain levels of masculinity and feminity, that there is nothing special about this and that all the factors that measures this level are rather reliable. The author of the essay is rather successful in providing this effect. As for me the notion that had the major influence on me was the last couple of sentences: I have no idea whether the right pronoun for God is He, She or It. But this Im pretty sure of. A man may have mixed characteristics and be the most wonderful man that could ever exist to one woman. The androgynous man may make another women happy. However, there are other women who may be attracted to the all-man man. It takes all types of men in order for there to be a match for all types of women.
