Shirley Jackson’s American Gothic Tale “The Lottery” shows on how are the female characters consider as an outsider or isolated in the society. The inadequacy of female characters prevails that they are being disregard to men camaraderie. Literary devices such as the luring progress of the plot, theme, deliberation of tone, witty symbols behind it; these are all shown for the readers to show easily how the roles of the women affect the social criticism.
A yearly event, called The Lottery, which randomly chooses a person by a draw and whoever picks the paper with the black circle on it he/she will be stoned to death by family and friends. This was traditionally done for over seventy years already yet it didn’t stop even though many already quitted doing it. The characters of the story are completely driven out by this tradition. “The lottery was conducted–as were the square dances, the teenage club, the Halloween program–by Mr. Summers, who had time and energy to devote to civic activities”. It says that the townspeople do not bother to ask about the tradition. Everybody requires participating and such things will always remain a tradition for them. “Some places have already quit lotteries” As Mrs. Adams mentions it, the townspeople quickly turned silent. They didn’t even care or give notice to what Mrs. Adams said. It is obvious here that the women in the village are voiceless. Men are more powerful to express their opinions and more expected to be followed compared to women. Women just stand aside and observe what will happen next throughout the lottery event. “Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones… The girls stood aside, talking among themselves, looking over their shoulders at rolled in the dust or clung to the hands of their older brothers or sisters.” Mr. Summer’s job in coal has somehow a correlation in his involvement in lottery which explains that he is responsible for whatever he has done on his work. Another example is when Tessie complains to her husband that it was not fair that she was being picked. Her words seem nothing to her husband and being replied only to shut up. This is the way women are treated as if they don’t have the right to speak out and being heard. The men represent the hurdles of the women which needed to be avoided for them to be free from oppression.

The entire story goes through inside the rights of a woman. It created a movement for women. Movement that woman demands for acceptation to a male dominated society. Through Tessie, the aggressiveness and oppressiveness of the men overcomes. The strength of a woman should also be recognized and not being treated to be set aside.
