“Appeal: To attract interest or draw favorable attention.” Through out the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a constant source of appeal due to his heroic actions. Atticus demonstrates this through his unexpected shooting skills, the choice to defend Tom Robinson, and his kindness towards others and his enemies.
To start with Atticus Finch’s unexpected shooting skills had a lot of appeal to Scout and Jem. Scout believes Atticus could not do anything cool or interesting. Scout comments, “ Our father don’t do anything. He worked in an office, not a drugstore. Attiucs didn’t drive a dump-truck for the county, he was not the sheriff, he did not farm, work in a garage, or do anything that could possibly arouse the admiration of anyone.” (Lee 89 ).
When Atticus shoots Old Tim Johnson, he gets a near dead shot, surprising Scout and Jem. After Atticus shoots Old Tim Johnson, Scout and Jem are utterly shocked at how well Atticus’s shot was. Jem was completely out of it. He sat at Miss Maudie’s steps “ in numb confusion” ( Lee 97 ) . Miss Maudie also commented to Scout, “ Miss Maudie grinned wickedly, “Well now Miss Jean Louise,” she said “ still think your father can’t do anything?” ” ( Lee 98 ).
Atticus brings appeal to Scout and Jem because they never knew their father could shot. Secondly, Atticus’s skill itself causes favorable attention or appeal. Miss Maudie comments, “ Forgot to tell you the other day that besides playing the Jew’s Harp, Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb county in his time.” ( Lee 98 ).

Also the fact that Atticus hide his talent and never told Jem nor Scout attracts a lot of attention, curiosity, and speculation. Jem says “ “He never said anything about that, ” .” ( Lee 98 ) Scout tries to tell everyone, to bring attention, “When we went home I told Jem we’d really have something to talk about at school on Monday.” ( Lee 98 ), and Miss Maudie speculates as to why Atticus didn’t tell the kids. “ “Maybe I can tell you,” said Miss Maudie. “ If your father’s anything, he’s civilized in his heart. Marksmanship’s a gift of God, a talent – oh, you have to practice to make it perfect, but shootin’s different from playing the piano or the like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things. I guess he decided he wouldn’t shoot till he had to, and he had to today.” ” ( Lee 98 ) . Therefore Atticus appeals to his children through a hidden talent drawing the readers attention to Atticus.
On top of Atticus’s remarkable shooting , he chooses to defend African-American Tom Robinson, along with the respect and care Atticus shows through out the novel appeal to the people of Maycomb. A white man choosing to defend a black man brings interest to Atticus’s decisions. This brings appeal to Atticus through the people of Maycomb. For example ‘Quote”. Because Atticus is doing something “odd” or “unpopular” it brings interest and appeal to Atticus’s character. Secondly, the fact that Atticus cared for Tom Robinson was “unusual”. Before Tom Robinson’s court trial Atticus left the house late at night with a flashlight and a chair. Mr. Walter Cunningham and other men had come during the nigh in attempt to kill Mr. Robinson. Mr. Cunningham says “ You know what we want… , Get aside from the door, Mr. Finch.” ( Lee 151 ).
But instead of moving aside and letting Mr. Cunningham and the others harm Tom Robinson Atticus replies “ “ You can turn around and go home again, Walter,” Atticus said pleasantly.” ” ( Lee 151 ).

Through this choice it brings interest to Atticus. Most white lawyers who were stuck defending a black man would not care what the black man did or said. In the case of Tom Robinson, Atticus shows remorse in the fact that Tom Robinson had tried a prison break and was killed. Atticus comes home the day he hears the news of Mr. Robinson’s death and Scout notices “ His hat was in his hand, and his face was white.” ( Lee 235 ) Atticus also shows a bit of sadness through this comment, “ Atticus leaned against the refrigerator, pushed up his glasses and rubbed his eyes. “ We had such a good chance,” he said. “ I told him what I thought, but I couldn’t tell him in truth say we had more than a good chance….” ” ( Lee 235 ) Atticus Finch cared a deal about Tom Robinson which was very different in Maycomb and “odd” to care for a black man. In conclusion by defending Tom Robinson, Atticus develops more appeal than he already demonstrates in the book.
Lastly, Atticus Finch was kind and respectful everyone in Maycomb including his enemies, who threatened Atticus for defending Tom Robinson. Atticus draws favorable interest by respecting his enemies. For example Mr. Bob Ewell was an enemy to Atticus Finch and Atticus did not do anything rude or hurtful in return to Mr. Bob Ewell. An example of this is when Miss Stephanie Crawford had told the children “ …. Atticus was leaving the post office when Mr. Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him….” “… Miss Stephanie said Atticus didn’t bat an eyes, just took out a handkerchief and wiped his face and stood there and let Mr. Ewell call him names wild horses couldn’t not bring her to repeat.” ( Lee 217 ).
Through Atticus’s choice not to react to Mr. Ewell it brings favorable attention to Atticus’s character. As well as being exceptionally kind to Mr. Ewell, Atticus was respectful to Tom Robinson even though he was a black man. Atticus stood up for Mr. Robinson when Mr. Cunningham came to murder him and he stood up for him in the courts. Atticus would not let Mr. Cunningham hurt Tom. Mr. Cunningham told Atticus to move aside and Atticus just told him, “ “ You can turn around and go home again, Walter,” ( Lee 151 ) Because Atticus stood up for Tom Robinson and respected him this appealed to Tom Robinson’s family and also Atticus’s. Thirdly, Mrs. Dubose is a good example of Atticus’s ongoing kindness and respect. He respected Mrs. Dubose though she insulted him and his children constantly. Atticus would be kind to Mrs. Dubose by, “… Atticus would sweep off his hat, wave gallantly to her and say, “ Good evening, Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this evening.” ( Lee 100 ) Atticus would respect Mrs. Dubose even though she constantly was rude to Scout and Jem, Mrs. Dubose would make remarks to Scout like, “ “ You’ll grow up waiting on tables if somebody doesn’t change your ways- a Finch waiting on tables at the O.K. Café- hah-!”.” ( Lee 101 ) She would remark to Jem as well saying, “ “ .. If you aren’t sent to the reform school before next week my name’s not Dubose!” ” ( Lee 101 ) Through Atticus’s kindness to Tom Robinson, Mrs. Dubose, and even Mr. Bob Ewell, it brings appeal to Atticus’s character.
