Human sexuality has been a topic with drastically different views on what freedom and rights should gay and lesbians be able to enjoy. In America some states have now recognized same sex couples rights to marry and enjoy the benefits of marital status. In other countries like Iran homosexuality is look at as an illness that goes against all laws of Islam. This paper will dissect the perception of basic human rights and the human freedom theories that either justify or oppose them.
The country of Iran is known as an Islamic Republic that takes governmental loyalty, social unification, and religious law seriously. Anything deemed as a threat to these fundamentals are quickly identified and dealt with. There is one existing threat that challenges the religious laws, homosexuality. Homosexuality is a crime punishable by imprisonment or execution in Iran. The President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the in his country homosexuality is viewed as “an ugly behavior”(Huffington Post, 2012).
Under the laws of Shari’a homosexuality is not recognized as two consenting individuals, meaning if men or women are caught engaging in any type of sexual behavior with the same sex are subjected to public beatings, imprisonment and in some cases death.
The Term Paper on Human Rights and Freedoms
In the first century during the major Rome crises was formed Christianity. Then was gradually formed the Church. Inculcation of the human heart and conscience has been presented in those times by Aurelius Augustinius. We can consider those facts as the idea for the birth of human rights and freedoms. However, the actual first written sources become from 1215 known as Magna Carta. Magna Carta ...
The views of homosexuality in America have divided this country. There are many who have accepted the homosexual community, but there are still people who view homosexuality the same way as the Iranians. Homosexuality is not against the law but those of the homosexual community still struggles to enjoy the basic rights of an American.
Right now only 14 out of the 50 states in America recognizes same sex marriages. Other states allow civil unions but don’t extend the same benefits of marriage to a same sex couple. Many Americans argue that they don’t care about homosexual but they rather these people don’t flaunt it in public. Would you tell a heterosexual couple not to kiss and hold hands in public? Why should homosexuals have to hide who they truly are when visible? The military recently allowed service members to serve openly without worrying about being penalized for being gay. Yet there are still service members who are shunned for their sexual preference.
Americans may not execute or imprison homosexuals, but we still expect them to live there lives in secret, fearing it will corrupt the children and Americas moral compass.
According to Chaffee, determinism is defined as “The view that every event, including human actions, is brought about by pervious events in accordance with universal casual laws that govern the world”(Chaffee, 2011).
One of the arguments of homosexuality if that it’s biologically per-determined.
This argument has caused many to dispute that claim of being born gay. Some would argue why would God create homosexuals and them deem them unnatural in his eyes? Others may argue why would someone choose a life where they are constantly ridiculed, persecuted and discriminated against? This argument would fit the freedom theory of biological determinism. Are the lives of homosexuals already ordained, or is there more to it?
The alternative to determinism is compatibilism. Compatibilism is defined as “The view that all events including human actions, are caused”(Chaffee, 2010).
The Essay on Homosexuality And Discrimination Gay Straight Alliance
Protection laws have been formed, to protect homosexuals against harassment and discrimination. The physical and emotional effects, of harassment and discrimination can be traumatic. Even though many government and business policies have been formed to protect homosexuals against discrimination, they are still physically and emotionally abused because of how society views them. Recently the number ...
What this means is that our lives are determined by we still have the free will to make our own choices.
Under compatibilism homosexuality can be considered as bot natural and sinful. This kind of thinking call us to believe that natural instincts can cause unnatural acts. This distinctly draws a line between homosexual acts and homosexuality. For some homosexuals with the traditional Bible belief, God can cure them of their unnatural feelings. On the other hand, you have homosexuals with a secular point of view and believe they are normal and what they feel is natural. Yet both of these views are seen unacceptable because on your sexual and romantic orientation cannot be altered and two the Bible still sees homosexuality as unnatural. In all homosexuals don’t enjoy freedom but are constantly judge by their heterosexual counterparts.
The freedom to be who you are can be seen as an illusion or not allowed because it poses a threat to the morality of society. This paper looked at homosexuality from the standpoint of two different countries American and Iran. Iran takes their religion seriously and any threat to its laws are considered an attack on the governmental system and the threat along with its supporters are removed. In America we simply say we accept your decision but don’t see you are equals because your sexual preference is unnatural in the eyes of God.
