1.1Background information of the study
A great change in the concept of language teaching has taken place in the past few decades, from the teacher-centered method to the learner-centered approach. In recent years, the learner autonomy has become a hot issue in second language acquisiton. Henry Holec defined it as “the ability to take charge of one’s own learning”.autonomous learning has been necessary for English learners for the following reasons. First, autonomous learning is considered as the ultimate goal of education, which is “learn how to learn”. Therefore, cultivating learners’ autonomy is actually cultivating the learners’ learning ability, so that they could become independent social members who would live and work successfully. Second, the teachers should help the learners to develop the attitude that learning is a lifelong process and to acquire the skills of self-directed learning. With the China’s entry into WTO, China’s success of bidding for the 2008 Olympic Games and more international corporation set their branch company in China, more and more people realize the importance of mastering English. Therefore, they started learning English. We could see it from the rapid increase in the number of the language training centers and institutions.

Language acquisition is a very complicated process, which is influenced by many factors. During the late 1970s Krashen put forward an account of SLA. In the early 1980s, this was expanded into a broader-based model, described in Krashen (1981;1982) as five linked hypotheses: acquisition/learning, monitor, natural order, input, and affective filter. The Input Hypothesis became most developed. According to this hypothesis, the learner improves and progresses along the “natural order” when he/she receives second language “input” that is one step beyond his/her current stage of linguistic competence. For example, if a learner is at stage “i”, then acquisition takes place when he/she is exposed to “comprehensible input” that belongs to level “i+1”. Since not all of the learners can be at the same level of linguistic competence at the same time, Krashen suggests that natural communicative input is the key to designing a syllabus, ensuring in this way that each learner will receive some “i+1”input that is appropriate for his /her current stage of linguistic competence. Linguistically speaking, input refers to the language the learner is exposed to.
The web-based multimedia language learning environment makes the students exposed to greater amount of language input, compared with the traditional classroom teaching. On the one hand, the multi-facet, diverse, and large amount of information arouse the students’ motivation and makes their learning much easier. It is apparent that the web-based multimedia learning evrionment enriches the language input and promote the autonomous learner’s language input. On the other hand, the mode of web-based multimedia language input would probably distract the learner’s attention and make the learner’s achievement less productive. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to help the learners to wisely choose the useful language learning materials with the guidance of the teacher, so that they could develop their autonomous learning ability and to achieve better proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The Essay on English Language Learner
The United States still represents to the rest of world a land of opportunities. Immigration occurs when people from all part of the world make their way here to start new lives, find their new jobs or build new homes. Some leave their country to flee from oppression and injustice. Some want a life to escape poverty. Now the English Language Learners in America school constantly growing percent of ...
1.2 Significance of the study
A Chinese proverb goes like “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach him how to fish and he eats for a lifetime”. It indicates the significant role of autonmous learning in life-long education. If the students do not have the autonomous learning capability, they can not learn English well, to be worse, they may not be able to work and live successfully and independently in the rapid developing society.
In recent years, more and more universities have adopted the web-based multimedia sound lab to help the students with their language learning. If this research could present a positive answer to whether the web-base multimedia learning environment could promote the autonomous learners’ language input. It would probably be of some help to the college English teaching. And the research could also present the students’ attitudes toward the web-based multimedia learning mode, and the difficulties and confusion they encounter during the whole learning process. All of these may be able to help the other researchers and teachers who endeavored to promote the students’ autonomous learning ability.
1.3Structure of the thesis
The following is the structure of the thesis:
Chapter 1 is a general introduction to the research: the background of the research, the significance of the study and the structure of the thesis.
Chapter2 begins with the introduction of learner autonomy and the theoretical background of autonomous learning: constructivism and humanism. Since teacher’s role would be quite different in autonomous learning so teacher’s role in autonomous learning is also introduced. Then Krashen’s input theory is introduced. Following this, the definition and development of web-based multimedia language learning. then how the languge input in web-based multimedia learning environment is discussed. Finally the assessment in autonomous learning conclude this chapter.

In Chapter 3, the research design of this study which includes two sections: a survey design and an experimental study is presented. The survey design is made up of research questions, definitions of variables, subjects, instruments, data collection and analysis. And the experimental design is composed of research questions, sampling and subjects, treatment and data collection and analysis. The study is analyzed from the quantitative perspective. The statistical results are reported at the end of each section. In the experimental design, the means, standard deviations and ranges of the pre-test and post-test are computed to explore the relationship between the variables.
In Chapter 4, results obtained from the above chapter are presented and the discussion of the results is furthered based on the data generated from the two designs.
In Chapter5, conclusions are first reported. After it, the limitations of the present study are mentioned and recommendations for future study are suggested at last.
