SOCIAL NETWORKING
While Social Networking is expanding everyday all over the world, it is changing our lives sometime for the good and sometimes for the bad. Social networking offers a variety of ways people communicate with each other. In addition, these sites can pose major threats to individuals through the privacy settings within each of these sites. I will look at the different sites, the pros and cons, and their impact on society today.
Social networking has been around since 1969 with the launch of ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) of U.S. Department of Defense. It is considered the Model T of the Internet. “ARPAnet protected the flow of information between military installations be creating a network of geographically separated computers that could exchange information via a newly developed protocol (rule for how computers interact) called NCP (Network Controlled Protocol).”(Bellis, Mary) 1 It is many years later before the next networking site would be launched. In 1980, Usenet launched and it is still in use today. Usenet resembles a bulletin board service where members can read and post articles. “Usenet has significant cultural importance in the networked world, having given rise to, or popularized, many widely recognized concepts and terms such as FAQ and spam.”2 ListServ is launched in 1986. “It was the first electronic mailing list software application, consisting of a set of email addresses for a group in which the sender can send one email and it will reach a variety of people.”3 (Wikipedia, July 1986) It is still in use today. These first networking sites are the building blocks of the Social Web, as we know it today.

The 1990’s started the growth of the Social Web. With time, these social networking sites have grown more popular and the technology has become more advanced. Classmates.com was one of the earliest sites launched. It came around in 1995. Classmates.com was created so the one could find their friends from kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and even the United States military. Members can access information about where their classmates are living, married or not, children or not, etc. In order to gain access to this type of information, the member has to pay a yearly membership fee. Classes can also post information about an upcoming reunion.
Friendster launched in 2002 and is designed for its users to contact other users through messaging. Its users can share photos and videos with other users. Friendster is also used for dating and discovering new events, bands, and hobbies (common interest) among the other users. In 2003, Linkedin and MySpace came on the scene. Linkedin became popular among the professionals by providing network of other professionals. It is also used to help professionals find jobs through their contacts (connections).

In August 2003, MySpace launched for musicians to use as a way of advertising their music. It later became one of the most popular social networking sites. MySpace was the most popular social networking site in the United States in June 2006. (Cashmore, Pete 2006).4
The year 2004 brought many social networking sites to the Internet. In February 2004,
Facebook is launched and it was intended to be used by college students only. It was expanded for high school students. The intention of Facebook was to help students get to know each other better. It now welcomes users of all ages. Facebook has become the largest social networking website with over 500,000,001-registered users.5 Facebook has connected users to others all over the world.
THE REGISTERED NUMBER OF FACEBOOK USERS6
(In millions)
Facebook allows its users to post blogs, pictures, videos, news stories, notes, etc. and share those with other users. There are over 500 million active users on Facebook, but interestingly, 50% of active users log on in any given day.7 Each average user has 130 friends and is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events.8 People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook.9 Facebook reports that its greatest growth now comes from the 35-to-49-year old age group, and 50-to-64-year olds are joining the site at twice the rate of teens. (Corbett, 2009)10 There are more than 200 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.11
Facebook also has so many other impacts on our life every single day like before doing one thing of schoolwork or the second that you turn on your computer you open the internet explorer and go straight to Facebook or another social network site. Another big impact is that you can now receive all of your Facebook info on a phone so most people are focused on checking a notifications or a message on their Facebook rather than paying attention in class.
YouTube launched in 2005. It is the second most popular search engine. YouTube is designed as a video-sharing website. Twitter came on the scene in 2006, which offers a social networking and micro blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages called tweets. The past six years brought us social networking sites such as Bebo, Flixster, and Flickr to name a few. There are over 200 active social networking sites in use today.

A social network service focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, e.g., who share interests and/or activities. A social network service essentially consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web based and provide means for users to interact over the internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. Although online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service in a broader sense, social network service usually means an individual-centered service whereas online community services are group-centered.
Age distribution on social networking sites12
Social Websites are a major part of the general population’s lives today. Social Networking has had an impact on lives all over the world. It has brought some families closer together no matter the distance between them. Families is able to be updated on each other activities and is able to share photos each other across the world. Another positive impact these sites have is that they give businesses an easy way to advertise. If they help support the website they can advertise within the website. Many users may not consider this a negative but businesses cannot be faulted for wanting to find new innovative ways to advertise.
Privacy and safety issues on social networking sites were not top priority for most users in the beginning. Most of the time users leave their privacy settings as default ‘open’. Most sites require the user to set up a profile using their real name, which is visible for searching and identification. Most sites also allow users to relax or strengthen their definition of public information. Privacy expectations in social networks are based on relationships. Typical social networks support friends and networks with privileged access. (Felt, Adrienne, and Evans, David. (2008).13

The future of Social Networking is going to be exciting for its users. Social Networking will become portable and this is happening now with I Pads and cell phones. Bluetooth wireless technology could soon alert the emergency services when someone has a heart attack through “body sensors”. A virtual reality version of social networking sites will create a more interactive experience. (Nathan, 2010) 14 Not only will a user be able to see who is online but they will be able to see who is close by. The use of cell phone tower triangulation and global positioning systems will be able to provide this type information.
This is an exciting time for social networking sites, which are rapidly expanding, adding functionality and growing their user bases. Big changes lay ahead the are both compelling and threatening. In many ways, the future of social networking sites will define the future of the Internet.
