In chapter one they ask, what is success? I believe success is keeping up good grades, living a happy life by maintaining a social life. Success is to be looked up to by many. Last but not least I believe success is to leave the world knowing you’ve made somebody’s life easier by your existence. They asked that question to many undergraduate students and some of the answers they gave were “Success is to get all A’s and B’s, being the first person in my family to earn a college degree, having a great social life…etc.” Those were only a few answers. The interviewers noticed that each response emphasized outer success. Then they interviewed actual college graduates, and there answers were a little different. They said “success is to focus on learning instead of just getting good grades, discover my personal values, learn more about the world I live In and more about myself, etc.” Those answers were similar but the college graduates focused on inner success.
In this chapter I learned a lot. I learned about values I need to succeed in life. I need to believe in myself by developing self-acceptance. High self-esteem is the fuel that can propel us into the cycle of success. If I have high self-esteem, I will most likely chose options that will move me toward success. If you don’t believe in yourself most likely no body will.

2. Accepting Personal Responsibility
In this chapter I learned the value of responsibility and its beneficial outcomes. When people keep doing what they’ve been doing even when it doesn’t work, they are acting as victims. When people change their beliefs and behaviors to create the best result they can, they are acting as creators. I learned when you accept your personal responsibility; you believe that you can create everything you possibly want. A great thing about our future is that we get to create it; we create it with our choices. The greatest lesson of life is that you are responsible for your own life. This chapter was helpful because it taught me to become a creator instead of a victim. Creators focus on how to improve, seek solutions, seek help from those more skilled, and accept responsibility.
3. Discovering Self-Motivation
There are many things in life that keep me striving towards success, but nothing keeps me going like the thought of my parents one day seeing me graduate college. I love my parents. They have both done so many things for me. I possibly cannot pay them back with money, but one thing I can pay them back with would be with my success. Them seeing me succeed is the best form of paying somebody back with. Before I even graduate, I have to apply myself and prioritize myself. Everything I do from now on I have to ask myself why I am doing it, and what will be the outcome. Doing that I will definitely make wiser choices and I will be closer to my dream of my parents seeing me graduate college. This chapter taught me how to set goals. First of all I have to date my plans. I have to set my motivational goals by giving myself a specific deadline. My goal has to be achievable, which is good because I don’t think graduating college is rocket science. They also have to be specific and positive goals; most importantly they have to be personal goals!!!! Your goals have to be YOUR goals, not someone else’s. You don’t want to realize one day you have lived someone else’s life.
4. Mastering Self-Management
Self management is by far one of the most important skills you need to develop to do good in college without killing yourself. They say if you want good grades and sleep you cannot have a social life, but if you want sleep and a social life most likely you will not have good grades. But in reality you can accomplish all 3! You just have to create a self-management system! Sleep itself already takes up 8 hours so that rite there leaves you with 16 hours. You can use 8 hours for your schoolwork and the other 8 hours to socialize and do what you please. But it takes dedication and staying focused to manage that. What you put into school is what you will get out of it.

If you work hard, you must play hard. You have to celebrate your successes and talents. Nobody likes a guy who party’s every weekend but doesn’t have the intelligence to back it up. But on the other hand everybody respects the guy who has fun but is school smart at the same time; by doing so not only will you be more likeable but also your presence will be very much admired.
5. Employing Interdependence
One must recognize that life is richer when it is earned rather than given to from others. In this chapter I learned about dependence, codependence, independence, and interdependence. I can relate to me being interdependent. I believe I know I can get some of what I want by working alone, but ill accomplish more and have more fun I give and receive help. On this chapter there was a quote that I liked, it goes a little something like this “Don’t be fooled into thinking you are alone on your journey. You’re not. Your struggle is everyone’s struggle. Your pain is everyone’s pain. Your power is everyone’s power. It is simply that we take different paths along our collective journey toward the same destination.” –Benjamin Shield (p.142) you must give to receive. You must surround yourself with people who are only going to lift you higher.
The moral of the chapter is to clarify and demonstrate that you are not alone in your journey whatever it may be. Seek help from instructors. If you are not sure on what courses to take seek help from a counselor! They are PAID to do that so don’t think you will be bothering them. Use your resources wisely!
6. Gaining Self-Awareness
Self-awareness goes hand in hand with common sense. It is not difficult to understand. If something you do is giving you negative outcomes then simply stop doing it; it is that simple. A successful student realizes when he or she is off track. The name of the book is called ON course, not OFF course. The book gives you great questions to ask yourself if one day you happen to find yourself off course. For example, “what choices did I make to get off course?” “What changes can I make to get back on course?” etc. So therefore you have no excuse to be off track. This chapter will walk you through to making a life change. There is also a self-defeating habit survey, which I took and found very useful. It determines how much help you need to get on track and or stay on track. If you don’t make each decision carefully, you will never know where you’ll end up.

7 Adopting Lifelong Learning
To do well in college, life, etc, you must develop a learning style. The reason you have to develop a learning style because everyone learns different, and you will need your learning style to learn things for the rest of your existence. There are four components of emotional intelligence. Emotional self-awareness, emotional self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. I am very good when it comes to managing my emotions. I make wise choices despite of the powerful emotions I happen to go through. I avoid making permanent decisions over a temporary feeling. Instead I wait till I simmer down completely, then if I still feel the need to make the decision I was going to make when I was mad, and then I go ahead and do it, but most of the time that is not the case.
What I need to work on is understanding what causes my emotion. I need to realize when sadness is caused by disappointments, because if I don’t, then later I will ask myself why I am feeling like this and most likely end up blaming others or something else. When you happen to go through emotional stress, you have to chose different thoughts and get away from your stressor. What I do when I am mad at somebody is just avoid him or her and go to the gym. Not only will I forget about the problem, get rid of my stress, but I will also get buff doing so. All in all the best thing in my opinion to alleviate some sort or stress is talking to somebody you can completely open up to. The last thing you want to do is bottle up your anger and frustration inside of you. You will get nowhere by doing so.
