There are many ways we can exchange this information whether it be in verbal or nonverbal means. verbal communication is a way of communicating on face-to-face level using words, sounds, language, and speaking. nonverbal communication is a way of communicating through nonverbal messages ways usually through eye contact, body language, facial expressions, and posture. With both means of communication there are positive and negative aspects for both sender and receiver.
Verbal communication has many positive aspects. It is a direct form of communication. With the use of eye contact, the sender, and the receiver will obtain an immediate response and immediate feedback. This type of communication is back and forth. E-mailing has been an asset to the work environment because it is a fast and efficient way of communicating without disrupting the work day. One can just shoot a quick e-mail and there is a record of these messages for review. E-mail has increase productivity. With all positive aspects come the negative aspects of nonverbal communication.
Because nonverbal communication is very apparent before one even opens their mouth, it can give way to a negative opinion of someone. If a potential hire comes into the office looking like a slob, but he or she introduces themselves very eloquently, nonverbal communication gives a contrasting opinion to their future employer. Nonverbal communication is not only given through facial expression, but also through the way a person carries themselves or dresses themselves. Another negative feature is that it can become hard to distinguish which communication level the sender is encoding the message and how the receiver is decoding the message. Once again age gaps come into play as well as technology. E-mailing can take longer and does not give instant results as verbal communication. Finally, nonverbal body communication leaves no room for secrecy. If one comes into the workplace looking a mess or upset, it may be very hard to disguise those indicators. It is likely that many coworkers may ask what is wrong or assume you are in a bad mood.
