1. The actions that were in Phil’s control were his everyday habits. The only thing he was not in control of was the fact that he would wake up every morning and it would be the same day every day. He was able to save all the lives of the people around him. He had the capability to kill himself when he wanted to, or try and save the lives of everyone around him. This affected him because he could control everything that went on around him every day. He was able to save peoples’ lives and ultimately win the woman that would save him in the end. If it had not been for all of the coincidental incidents that he “happened” to stumble upon, Rita would not have found him so interesting. Because of his unfortunate circumstance, he was able to have the woman he was in love with, fall in love with him. 2. Phil’s solution was to limit his own desires by putting everyone else’s life ahead of his own. He took it upon himself to save all of the people in the town. For example, he saves the little boy falling from the tree, the man choking on his steak, and a homeless man who he claims to be his father. By doing so, he does not necessarily resign himself to fate, but rather let himself dictate fate by knowing everything that is going to happen. His solution was to have Rita fall in love with him by seeing that he was a good man, and in the end his solution worked.
3. The life of the average person can be repetitive from time to time. Especially when one has a job and wakes up at the same time every morning and goes to bed the same time every night. Phil had a different circumstance. He was actually repeating the same day every day. The Groundhog-day experience would be frustrating because one would have no idea why the situation was happening. Phil had no idea why he was stuck in the same day every day, he just had to suck it up and deal with it. By doing so he saw the woman he loved every day and knew that he would have no chance with her and would have to continue fighting for her knowing that it would never work. It would be frustrating because no matter what one would do, nothing would matter in the end because all would be forgotten and tomorrow would be another day. 4. In Groundhog day, Phil is able to do what he wanted without having the consequences severely affect his life and the life of others. The lines between injustice and justice would then be blurred since his actions did not cost the lives of others for a long period of time. He would be able to do what he wanted without consequences.
The Essay on Down: Personal Life and Time
In college it is easy to stray away from the main purpose, which is having a higher education. College years are supposed to include fun but not too much fun. Relaxation also plays a significant role in the turn out of ...
Glaucon also suggests that morality is only a social construction, the source of which is the desire to maintain one’s reputation for virtue and justice. Phil was only saving peoples’ lives not for the sake of humanity, but or the sake of his social construction. He saved their lives because it was really the only thing he could do anymore. He did it for Rita, so that she would love him. The lines of justice in his actions were blurred with the lines of injustice as to why he did all of his actions in the first place. 5. The fatalistic theme of the movie would have been different if the morgue seen was removed from the movie because it would not have shown the consequences of his actions in a long term effect. Rita’s reaction to his death shows that there was a chance that they could be together.
Phil puts his faith in the fact that he is going to wake up every day and everything will be the same as it was the day before, assuring him that fate is not real. Without the morgue scene, the audience would not have seen that fate is inevitable in all scenarios. 6. A stoic would accept all kinds of emotion, but not express them outwardly. Confusion, acceptance, and intellectual improvement would all be accepted and outwardly expressed. It would be easy for a stoic to understand the good parts of life and accept them as not a part of an error in judgment. They would reject the outward expression of depression, and romantic desire. Phil, as a stoic, does not show completely his romantic desire in a normal ‘emotional’ way, but rather by expressing them through his actions. To show his love for Rita, he learns piano, and learns ice sculpting in order to show what he can do. Rather than expressing all of one’s’ emotions, a stoic will accept them internally, rather than externally.
