Pedro’s Education
Pedro went through a lot while dealing with the fact that he was HIV positive. At first he was a little ashamed about it but then came to a point where he took the negative and turned it into a positive. He realized that he really didn’t know too much about the disease he suffers from and he had to allow others to educate him about it. After being educated, Pedro came to a time when he didn’t want to just suffer from this disease, he wanted to be able to do something about it and what he chose to do was to educate others about HIV and AIDS.
When Pedro first found out that he was HIV positive, he really didn’t know how to react. As shown on pages 47 and 48, Pedro is driving around in his car and thinking to himself. “Why is this happening to me?” He doesn’t understand why something like this would happen to him, “I am a good kid. I am clean-cut. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I’m good to my family. I do well in school. I’m a jock. I am an honor student. Things like this don’t happen to me. I don’t get AIDS.” Pedro is very confused about the news he had just received, he was very uneducated about the truth of HIV and AIDS. On page 47 when Pedro is driving around in his car, the entire page is filled with little snap shots of Pedro and his car. The sadness in his eyes and how much is going on in the one page signifies how important this part of the novel is. The following page Pedro believes he has come to the realization that he has AIDS and he is going to die.

After Pedro’s’ first outbreak of shingles from having HIV, he experienced a change of heart. When Pedro looks at himself in the mirror, he sees his HIV staring right back at him he must face the truth. “I am sick now. I am going to get better but it doesn’t change the fact that something is wrong with me. I should stop denying that and start doing something about it.” This is one of the major turning points that Pedro experiences. He then gets hooked up with an HIV organization based in Miami. He then meets with others who suffer from AIDS and HIV, and finally gets educated about the disease he suffers from. “I finally had my AIDS myths lifted from me… I am not a victim.”
Pedro had a major turning point in the way that he thought about being HIV positive. Initially he didn’t want to share this news with anyone, even his own supportive family. He then built up enough courage after meeting with others who had HIV or AIDS and was educated himself about the facts of HIV and AIDS. He first did a class presentation and stood up in front of a class of 25 students and said he was HIV positive. His teachers where so moved that they asked him to give a lecture in front of the entire school. On page 54 of Pedro and Me, Pedro stands before his entire school and tells them, “I’m HIV positive.” This panel is dedicated to one page which shows that it is a very important point in the novel. You can also see everyone’s reactions on his or her faces to the news of Pedro being HIV positive. Some are frightened, some are saddened, and some are shocked with the news. This is a point where Pedro realizes that he doesn’t want to have to hide this and being how most people reacted to his lecture in front of the entire class, he now knows that he wants to go out and educate people about HIV and AIDS. After getting educated himself and him educating his entire class, he notices that he would be able to educate so many others about the truth of HIV and AIDS, there are so many people who don’t know the truth.
Before, during, and after being on MTV’s The Real World Pedro lectures at many different places educating others about AIDS. He made sure to cover the basics of how it is contracted, how to avoid contraction, and where HIV is present; the AIDS 101. He didn’t want others that have to go through what he has to go through. The topic of HIV and AIDS is a very serious and tense subject, Pedro used humor at time in order to lighten up the mood and make the audiences feel more comfortable. Page 96 and 97 are great examples of Pedro using humor in his presentations. He is discussing how to prevent the contraction of HIV with the use of condoms. He addresses the main reasons why people say they don’t want to use condoms, “its uncomfortable, it makes sex feel different, and they are just too tight.” He thinks this is an unreasonable response for not protecting yourself from HIV. He proceeds to take out a condom and states, “if anything, a condom can increase pleasure by preventing you from ejaculating too soon.” He then takes the condom out of the package and gives some sort of demonstration. He puts the condom over his two hands and stretches it out in many different ways, making it make noises as it snaps on his hands.

This really lightens up the mood of the audience, they are all laughing hysterically This demonstration proves that no matter how big or small, condoms are made to fit all shapes and sizes. Therefore, there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to not use one. Pedro also addressed the fact that older men took him advantage of as a teenager. He wants others to know that “you don’t need to make love in order to feel worthy, you are worthy and loved.” He shared this experience with others because he felt like there are so many people who would be able to relate to that, in the sense that they thought they would feel loved if that made love. But those are two very different topics. Young teenagers are very vulnerable as is and they want to be able to fit in with everyone else. Pedro tried to do the same as a teenager, but look where it got him.
After being on The Real World and giving many lectures, Pedro gets really sick from complications of HIV, his immune system didn’t work right and he was more susceptible for illnesses. While in the hospital, Pedro asked Judd to substitute in for him until he gets out of the hospital and healthy again. Judd was a little nervous about going up in front of an entire auditorium of students to talk about something he had just recently learned about. “Tell them what they need to know about AIDS and HIV.” Judd realizes how important it is for Pedro for others to continue being educated even while he is sick, so Judd agrees. The only problem is Pedro isn’t going to get better, he will only get worse. Even with the tragic news that Pedro was getting worse, how much of an impact he had made on so many people had not been forgotten. While in the hospital and unable to speak any more, President Clinton calls on the phone in order to thank Pedro for what he has done and how much he had impacted so many young students.

After Pedro’s death, Judd continues to educate the youth with respect for what Pedro would have wanted. He would lecture and lecture, in honor of Pedro. After speaking to many college students, Judd ha his first middle school group, this was the youngest group he had ever spoke to. He decided to do the same thing as he would for older audiences and be honest, frank, and straightforward. While speaking about condoms, the entire audience bursts out in laughter. “The teachers were actually a lot worse. You could feel the more conservative ones start to squirm as I got up to stuff like mutual masturbation and dental dams.” The teachers were not too happy with Judd’s methods to teach the children about AIDS and HIV. He didn’t know how else to address these topics, so he just continued. Although some of the teachers weren’t too happy with Judd, the teacher who had invited him to come in the first place took him aside. There was a little girl, Laura, in the audience who has just recently lost her older brother to AIDS and the teacher had asked Judd to take her aside and talk to her. Judd walked toward her and she had tears running down her face, he approached her, said just a few words and she gave him a hug.
She needed someone who understands how much pain she was in and someone who could relate to what she was going through. People don’t normally talk truthfully to kids because they don’t think they will understand, Judd believed this was wrong. “Somebody once told me that being sad is like carrying something really heavy. It hurts because you’re carrying around something so big. But after a while you get stronger and it’ll feel lighter. And it won’t hurt as much.” Judd knew exactly how she felt and thought this statement would help her understand that she is not alone with this feeling as sadness, Judd was going through it too. After talking with Laura Judd realized that after all this lecturing and going place to place, he had not let Pedro go. But he just wasn’t ready to.

Pedro had made just an impact on so many people around him, but this was his goal and he was happy to be able to educate others to help them avoid what he had to go through. Pedro had a very strong impact on Judd, he taught him everything he knows about AIDS and HIV, enough that Judd was able to take over for him once he passed away. Pedro made such an impact on so many people that even the President of the United States wanted to thank him for all that he had done. This was Pedro’s mission and during his short 22-year life, he was able to educate anyone who would listen. If Pedro could do something so amazing in just 22 short years, what do you think could be done in a lifetime?
