Education is meant to be a powerful tool that brings people together in the sharing of subjects. To a certain extent that still holds true. Children are still forced to do group projects, university students are still advised to take a diversity of classes. So is there fault in the current education system in this country? I say no. Though I do think that there is a serious problem with the people within these education systems. When a child is beginning to learn teachers often put them into groups so the child does not feel isolated. The child gets the point of view of his or her peers. In being within a group people often feel more secure.
They do not worry as much about the topic. If there is something a person does not want to do within the project there is no worry, because someone else will do it. This is where the concept starts to grow bad. The intent of a group project is positive and helpful to all members. Though once executed there are the people who take charge and do as they are supposed to, but there is always a person or two that does not help whatsoever. That causes stress for the other students involved. Though this teaches problem solving skills and how to work together, it is my belief that it teaches children to slack off and cheat at a young age.

Why you ask? The students who actually do the work learn from this and develop great problem solving skills, where as the students who do nothing learn that they can get through their education without having to try; that there is always an easier way to finish an assignment. A concept that began positive is becoming negative. When it was not required for every person to have an education, adult went to university to become educated. That is these adults had a desire to learn and have a better understanding for a wider range of things in their world. People did not go to university so that they could become a specific thing.
Going to university for a degree was not something that happened. People wanted the cultural aspects, to understand more. Because of this, modern universities force students to take classes that are completely irrelevant to their major. The majority of students will complain about this. Students today simply want to get their degree as quickly as possible, taking the least amount of liberals as possible! The concept of becoming more educated in a general aspect—meaning any possible field—is dying. A biology major is forced to take an English class? Heaven forbid a biology major has to take an English class!
That concept of becoming more educated in a general sense is fighting so hard to maintain itself and there is almost no further appreciation for it. There is nothing wrong with this concept. Students should become more educated in each field but students do not want to take the time to slow down and think of the possible relevancy to their major. They don’t want to think “Hey one day in life this could be useful to know”. So you see readers, there is absolutely nothing wrong in the education system today. It is theoretically a wonderful way of making people into better versions of themselves.
The problem with a lack of learning within the system, or a lack of enthusiasm is due to students. Students have given up on what the idea of a student is. Cheating is too easy for us, so we do it to get our assignments done quickly. There is nothing that can be done to keep students from complaining about a class they do not like. Students in this time do not hold the enthusiasm and appreciation that students did fifty years ago. How can we solve this problem? Who knows, though I do feel that with time this issue will grow stronger and stronger. It will be interesting to see if anyone comes up with a remedy to this issue.
